Dead Keyboard on 3/50! To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com After being out of town for several months, I finally came home to my old 3/50 (hey, it's a nice XTerminal). On turning it on, however, I discovered that it couldn't recognize the keyboard and instead would read from ttya. I cleaned contacts. I exercised cables. Nothing. I yanked the board, discovered a dead keyboard fuse, replaced the fuse, and tried again -- NOTHING! Ugh. I finally checked out the hardware guide and discovered that 3/60's have a similar problem -- dead serial ports. My guess is that one of the Zilog uarts died. Anyone else have this problem? More importantly, anyone know how to fix it? Thanks in advance. - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 09:23:45 -0800 (PST) From: "Anthony D'Atri" Subject: slip on SS1+ running 4.1.3_U1 To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com >I'll pull down the merit PPP tar today ppp-2.2 from cs.anu.edu.au in pub/software/ppp works for me on the same platform. >cause but the ISP is configured for SLIP so it'll probably be faster to >get sliplogin working than wait for them to change the config to PPP. They have a good selection of used SUN stuff including memory. McKay" Subject: Suns at Home Page To: suns-at-home@tigger.net-kitchen.com I've finally got a Suns at Home Page up and ready for use. You can see it at: http://www.net-kitchen.com/~sah NOTE: Net-kitchen.com is connected to the Internet via 28.8 kb modem, so don't expect blindingly fast response. I have a cron job which checks my link periodically, but it is still possible to be down for periods due to busy modems at my ISP and the joys of GTE. :-( If you find you can't get to the page, please try it again a little later on. I currently have this monitor on loan from the person I wish to buy it from so I can try to figure out: a - if the 3/50 and the monitor can talk at all, and b - what the correct cabling pinout should be. I have the pinout of the 3/50's ECL monochrome video output connector, and I've removed the back panel of the monitor so I can look at the wires connecting to the back of it's input socket. The monitor takes video input through a female 9-pin 'D' connector. So far I've identified that pins 7 and 8 of the monitor's input connector appear to be 0 volts just like pins 7 and 8 of the Sun's video output connector. I've also mostly concluded that pins 1 and 6 of the monitor's input connector are the V+ and V- signals just as they are on pins 1 and 6 of the Sun's video output connector. However, I'm having trouble identifying which two of the other five pins take the HSYNC and VSYNC signals, and which of these two pins takes which signal. So far I can see that the monitor V+ and V- signals are coming in because of the pattern displayed. Trying various combinations of HSYNC and VSYNC with the other 5 pins sometimes causes the displayed pattern to change, but to date I haven't been able to get a stable, readable image. There are plenty of trimpots on the board with most of the electronics but apart from two large ones that are finger-adjustable (labelled 'FOCUS' and 'G-2') all the others are miniature types which are identified only by their schematic part numbers. If you have had any measure of success in getting one of these monitors to work with a 3/50, 3/60 or other machine with an ECL monochrome video output, could you let me know what you did to make the two pieces of hardware co-habit happily together? Thanks in advance, Craig. ---- end ---- - ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
