It supposedly was working ok till it's memory board died. I've found a replacement board (with terminating resistor in place) and being new to working on suns have read all the faq's I could find on the 3's in general. So I know about the jumpers on the backplane and the proper slots for the boards to go into. My current problem is that both with and without the memory board in (and using two different cpu boards) while starting it reaches the memory path data test and then resets itself. No error code (light 6 or 7) flashes. The memory board jumper is set on 0. The green ecc light is on as is the amber cpu disabled light on the memory board. One thing I wonder about (given that both cpu's have been sitting around for a while I'm sure) is what effect does having dead batteries on the cpu have? Any suggestions for further reading material (that is obtainable) would be quite welcome. Some drives have a jumper for this, usually the same size as the ones that set the SCSI id. Others have a place to plug in the resistor packs. As with the jumpers, there are several sizes of these; however it may not be evident which type to use just by looking. Maybe you can get a recommended manufacturer and part number from Conner. > 3. I just wish Sun had put these in the SS-2 to begin with... You might be able to get the short SCSI and power cables from a used-Sun dealer, such as Apex Computer or Rave. I don't have addresses or phone numbers here, but many of them advertise in Sun-oriented publications. In the SS1, and I think the SS2 case is the same way, the plastic carrier is not really needed. The holes it would snap into are usable to directly bolt down the drive. - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 1995 13:31:30 +0059 (EDT) From: joe turner Subject: Booting a Sun 3/60 diskless from Linux or BSD/OS 2.0? To: suns-at-home@ecn.purdue.edu I recently bought an old Sun 3/60 with keyboard, mouse, and screen for $100. I threw 8MB of memory into it, and decided I'd try what a friend does with the same setup: boot it diskless from a PC running Unix. My friend does it with NetBSD, since that apparently has rpc.bootparamd included. I would rather not run NetBSD since I'm told the user community isn't very large for the current release, and it also doesn't support a lot of cheaper PC hardware (like my video card and network board). I know BSD/OS and Linux will support both; my question is: has anyone else tried this with either BSD/OS (ie BSDI) or Linux? Is there a working rpc.bootparamd for Linux? I have a Sun-3 boot file and kernel; I just need a working rpc.bootparamd for BSD/OS or Linux. Help?! Then again, I could always just blow another $100 and get a small SCSI disk for the Sun, but I'd rather do it this way. :-) Thanks in advance! /joe - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 1995 23:13:09 +0200 (MET DST) From: eble@reardon.freinet.de (Axel Eble) Subject: dp 2.3 anyone? The board is probably an Emulex MT-02 SCSI=>QIC adapter. The other board connected to the SCSI cable is either an Adaptec ACB4000 SCSI=>MFM adapter, or an Emulex MD21 SCSI=>ESDI adapter. These are for the MFM or ESDI disk in the box, and have nothing to do with the tape. Don't throw any of it out, including the box and power supply. It should be an Archive 5945, which is a 60 meg capacity drive that uses the QIC-24 interface to talk to the outside world. I believe these drives can read 150 meg tapes as well as read/write 60 meg ones. > Anyway, the scsi cables connect to this drive thru a couple of other PCB's, > at least one of which has EMULEX written all over it. Adaptec also make (made?) a similar board, but Sun have always use the Emulex one. I know that West Coast Computer Exchange has them, cause I had to order two for some drives that I had...one for a SS1, one for an SS2. Sun used these contrllers with these drives in the Sun shoeboxes. As to whether or not the drive was scsi device, it's unclear from the Sun FE Handbook, since my copy doesn't contain any jumper settings for the Archive and Wangtek(sp?) tape drives. >From: Eric Tiffany (Is this the Eric I think it is? -- Earl) Wrote in response to >> From: ltate@empros.com (Larry Tate) >> Subject: ppp on sparc 1 running 2.4 >> >> Suns at home, >> >> I'm running a sparc 1 with solaris 2.4. I send a reply to Larry about this, basically it works just fine...and is documented reasonably well in the Sun Answerbooks that come one line with Solaris 2.4. I use this version of PPP for the dedicated connection I have between my SS2 (baugh.org) and the Cisco 2509 that's at the office where I work (which is another network). Sun's supplied PPP doesn't have as many bells and whistles as say, Morningstar's does, but it is usable. However, it has LOUSY debugging information....like "none"...Make sure the other end has some tools to trace down the problem....I had to put in a couple of calls in to Cisco and Sun in order to determine that the Solaris 2.3 version of the PPP software was seriously broken. The Morningstar PPP mailing list had more answers for me than either Sun or Cisco...so they do know their stuff... In the Sun-2 era, tape drives were QIC-02 (which is the control standard, not related to the tape-format standard) and were connected via Sysgen or Emulex boards, and disk drives were usually MFM and connected via Adaptec boards. In the Sun-3 era, tape drives were still QIC-02 and connected via Emulex boards, and disk drives were ESDI and connected via different Emulex boards.
