Biggers) Subject: Any suggestions for Conner HD install into a SS-2? To: suns-at-home@ecn.purdue.edu I recently purchased an appears to be an OEM version of a Conner drive (below) from a Inet PC dealer; i.e. absolutely no docs or anything. I didn't even get jumpers for the SCSI id and termination. :^( So, I've got a few questions for a SS-2 install. I will be calling Conner for the SCSI id and termination stuff, anyways. * Conner CFP 1080 (1.06 Gig) Fast SCSI II harddisk drive 1. How do I set SCSI id on this drive, and where can I obtain jumpers? (RadioShack?) 2. How do I set/remove termination, and where can I obtain jumpers? 3. How can I obtain (short) SCSI cables (25x2row pin connectors) and 4-pin to 4-pin (both ends) power connectors? I guess it would also be nice to get the plastic caddy thingy for the disk, too. I just wish Sun had put these in the SS-2 to begin with... This drive is being installed inside a Sun SPARCstation-2. Thanks for any suggestions. I'll be formatting this under SunOS 4.1.3, then booting the Solaris 2.4 CD-ROM and installing 2.4 on the Conner. ----mark - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jun 1995 14:58:03 -0400 From: earl@baugh.org (Earl Baugh) Subject: CD ROM's for Suns - Good deal. To: suns-at-home-list@ecn.purdue.edu While I'm not trying to push any company here (I have no affiliation with this place...) I've found a supplier for Toshiba 3301 CD-ROM drives at what I think is a good price, and thought I'd pass along the info. The place is SCSI Depot (1-800-291-7274) and I've purchased two bare drives (just drive, no enclosure) from them at $58 each. Following the CD-ROM FAQ I received from another member of this list, a slight modification to the drive, and vola! CD-ROM for the Sun. (also a side note: According to the FAQ, you may see some "unknown manufacturer" console messages, since Sun only had hard coded their two primary manufacturers [Toshiba wasn't one] However, with Solaris 2.4, I've not seen ANY messages. I've booted and installed the OS from the drive, so it's passed my test by fire...) Just thought people might be interested... Whatever I cannot give away goes to the recycler. I have manuals for release 4.0.3, 3.5 and even 2.0 ! If you are interested, then you must either come over* and fetch them, or provide a UPS/FedEx number so that I can ship them to you at your own expense. Send email soon, if interested. *I am in Berkeley, CA. It has the old SCSI1 50-pin D female connectors on the back. Its an archive drive - dont know whether its 60Mb or 150Mb, but I would guess 60. Anyway, the scsi cables connect to this drive thru a couple of other PCB's, at least one of which has EMULEX written all over it. My guess therefore is that this is not a true scsi drive, so what is it? ESDI? Thanks. - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 95 21:04 CDT From: chr@info.dau.tsinghua.edu.cn (Chen Huirong) Subject: submission To: suns-at-home@ecn.purdue.edu One of my computers is SUN4-C (Sun4/65). Recently , I add a printer to /dev/stclp0 of the computer. The entry of /etc/printcap is like this: lp|spp|STC parallel:\ :lp=/dev/stclp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd:af=/usr/adm/spp.acct:\ :if=/usr/lib/lpf:pl#66:pw#180:sh:sb: My problem is : If I use a smaller font to print a file to a paper with width of 380 mm and I want to print the text in 2 columns, using command /usr/5bin/pr -w170 -2 file_to_be_printed | lpr -Pspp the width of printed page is about 136 chars, that means, the right half of 2nd column would be cut off. If I omit the paper account, i.e. change the /etc/printcap entry to the form : lp|spp|STC parallel:\ :lp=/dev/stclp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd:sh:sb: then the printer works well with 2 columns printed completely. Perhaps the program /usr/lib/lpf does so ? Could somebody help me ? Besides, it seems that the paper number accounted is always bigger than the actual number of printed pages by 1( if the printed page is 3, the account number is 4, and so on.). Doesn't Solaris 2.4 come with PPP? I'm not sure how well it works, but I think it's ok if you don't use all the bells and whistles. There is also dp, which runs on Solaris, and maybe another.
