You might be able to get by with an old PC MFM hard-drive cable, which has a different twist than the PC floppy cable, instead of changing the drive-ID jumper, but I have not tried this. You also need a second 20-pin cable to run from the Emulex card to the second drive's "data" connector; the data connection cannot be daisy-chained. > Are there any jumpers that need changing on the Emulex controler card? No, but if you ever need to add another Emulex card you'll need to change its SCSI target ID using switches 1-3 (1 is LSB). > Are there any jumpers on the disks that need changing? Yes, the drive ID of the second drive needs to be set to either 1 or 2, depending on whether the first is called 0 or 1. I do not remember where the drive-ID jumpers are located. - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 1995 21:36:17 -0500 From: Evan Rosser Subject: Installation prob (4.1.1 on 3/260) To: suns-at-home@ecn.purdue.edu I ran into a problem installing SunOS 4.1.1 on my 3/260 from tape. Everything goes well until I have to mount the second volume. When I do, I get the error that / (the miniroot) is full, then "add_services: can't [mumble] /etc/install/XDRTOC". It then asks for volume 2 again; repeat as desired. I'm assuming here that suninstall is trying to read the table of contents ("TOC"?) of the second tape, and is failing for some reason. When I hit ^C, /etc/install/XDRTOC is a 1.8MB file. Is the second tape possibly corrupt? For some reason, despite being on a 48MB partition, the miniroot is only 6 or so MB; is there some way to enlarge it at install time? (if the XDRTOC file really needs to be 1.8MB, which seems excessive and/or broken). After this broke initially, I'd planned to install NetBSD/sun3; unfortunately it doesn't support my "Sun-2" SCSI card, and no one has plans to write a driver in the near future. Unless I write one myself (unlikely) or buy a "Sun-3" SCSI (possible), I'm back to fighting with SunOS. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! Also thanks to the people who helped me with my previous problem (Sun 3's expect sd0 at SCSI ID 0, not at SCSI ID 3. Stupid Maxtor docs. :-) - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Mar 1995 20:51:33 -0600 From: Matt Crawford Subject: Shrinking screen To: suns-at-home@ecn.purdue.edu I have an original sparcstation-1 (one owner, low mileage :) whose screen is shrinking. It's the Sony Trinitron monitor that was the standard 16" color issue when the SS-1 first came out. Four knobs in front, none in back. I now have about 3/4" of blackness right and left, and about half that top and bottom. If I open up the monitor, am I likely to find a diddle-knob for picture size? Matt Crawford (I'm melting! Yep, the second disk must be set for drive select 2 (the first is drive select 1). The jumpers are labeled DA1, DA2, DA3. Also, remove the terminator resistor pack from the drive that is NOT at the end of the cable. No, just buy a XM-4101B, strip the jumpers for sun operations and put it into your shoebox. Both BSDi and a (patched) version of Linux allow you to assign multiple IP addresses in software to a single computer. The new addresses can be pinged, but programs like ftp and telnet must be patched to use it. For example, a patched version of NCSA httpd is available which uses this function. The main advantage (for web servers) is that one machine can have multiple domains http://woodstock94.com http://taxwizard.com Without the virtual host, you're forced to do kludges like: http://woodstock94.com/album http://taxwizard.com:2393 in order to keep two web sites on one computer. Companies will normally object to this, since it makes them look like they don't have a "real" Internet site. The advantages are obvious, but this resource doesn't seem to be available for Suns running 4.1.3. The changes to the kernel are modest in Linux, and presumably they would be equally simple for the Sun. We're very interested in finding someone who can figure out how to do this on Suns.
