To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu Scenario: Well, I have a Sun 3/60 with SunOS 4.1.1U1 and it is at the moment not networked. So, I thought why not get a floppy so that I can save stuff on it and then print it using another machine. But, on looking at the GENERIC kernel, there's no mention of floppy drives. Also, one the drives went bad and right now I'm only left with one working shoebox with 141MB HD and 60MB tape drive. Question: 1. Can I hook up a floppy to the Sun 3/60? 2. Do I _have_ to get a SCSI to replace the broken one in the shoebox? - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jan 95 20:51:17 GMT From: Robert Nicholson Subject: Problems with dp-2.3 and resolv+2.1 under 4.1.3_U1 To: dplist@phoenix.acn.purdue.edu 4.1.3_U1 I attempted to install dp 2.3 this weekend. The actual arguments are usually controlled by the device (Netblazer, Portmaster, Sun, Linux, Mac etc.) that is speaking PPP on the HUB side. Many have success with: PPP_ARGS=vjmode,draft You sohould be able to use nslookup ubtil you get the domain name service running properly. David Braddock - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Jan 95 09:39:48 EST From: Greg Tarsa Subject: Serial port problems on SUNOS 4.1.1 To: suns-at-home@ecn.purdue.edu We are having a strange problem that involves our modem, kermit, and possibly our serial ports. While uucp connections seem to work acceptably, we often have problems connecting to a remote site. What appears to happen is that the output from the site gets garbled, but not in the typical way that line noise usually manifests itself: we always seem to get printable characters in the garbling. Even when an interactive session starts out acceptably, most attempts to use kermit to transfer a file of any reasonable size dies in the middle with "too many NAKs". We have tried all manner of modem settings to see if we can get around this problem: using exactly the uucp settings does not do it, disabling error correcting and/or compression has no effect, hardware/software flow control does not effect it and it seems to happen regardless of the DCE/DTE speeds (we have force both sides to lower speeds with no improvements). I remember hearing about problems with the zs serial ports on SUN machines, but have not details on either the problem, or the solution, if any. If someone could enlighten me on this, I would be obliged. We are running SUNOS 4.1.1 and the modem is a Zyxel U-1496E. Any help on this would be appreciated. To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu Hi Craig, I read your message about problems with X11R6. The solution to your problem is actually simple - use gcc 2.6.2. This will allow you to build the shared libraries on your Sun 3. It's not just theory, I've done it --- here's the output of file on the programs on my X11R6 build tree (from a sun 3/60): libXmu.sa.4.20: archive random library libXmu.so.4.20: mc68020 demand paged shared library executable not stripped So you see that this will work. Good news! I've found another problem, and so far no solution - so anybody out there that has any ideas at all, please drop me a note. I get an undefined symbol __C0095A2A while compiling xdm. I checked the sparc machines at work, and found this symbol is reference in librpcsvc.a and defined in the des_crypt.o module from the shared library (and also other places, also in the des_crypt.o module). The sparcs are running a pretty patched up version of 4.1.2, the 3/60 at home is running 4.1.1, of course. Any ideas are welcome. (Including another > sun 4/330 running the same operating system). I'm not familiar with the 4/330, but since you've changed the processor board I take it that that is where the Ethernet interface is. It seems none too likely that a newly-replaced board would be faulty. There are many possible causes for this message, but when only one client is experiencing problems it is likely that the problem is in that client's network connection. If you are using thicknet, check the transceiver and its drop cable. Vampire-tap transceivers occasionally get loose and cause this sort of problem. If you are using thinnet, check the tee and its connection to the thinnet cable. These can occasionally cause trouble. With either one, if there are no clients beyond this one as seen from the server, it is also possible that you have a backbone cable problem. - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jan 1995 08:11:09 +0100 (MET) From: eble@reardon.freinet.de (Axel Eble) Subject: Suns-at-Home Digest V8 #3 (fwd) To: suns-at-home@harbor.ecn.purdue Forwarded message: > > Date: Sun, 22 Jan 95 23:49:57 GMT > From: David Allan Finch - home > Subject: Problems building X11R6 on Sun 3/80 using gcc 2.6.1 > To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu > > On Thu, 12 Jan 1995 01:25:28 +1100 (EST) > craig@orb.apana.org.au (Craig Dewick) writes: > > |> Sooooo..... can someone give me the rundown on how to get the shared > |> libraries to compile on a Sun-3. Look in the comp.windows.x FAQ No, it probably won't help ;o) You have to set a special target in the global Imakefile. Look for the description of the Imakefile targets in the documentation subdir of the X11R6 src tree. (I believe it's called MakeLocalLibs or some such).
