The drive is a Maxtor XT-4380E. Checking out the > format.dat file, this drive is not listed ... > will my Emules MD21 controller support this drive ? > I have: > Sun 3/110 with SCSI controller (sc0) > Emulex MD21 controller with a Micropolis 1355 ESDI disk The MD21 "should" work with any ESDI drive. I have heard mixed reports on whether the format program will work properly with two drives of different dimensions on a single MD21. (It may depend on which SunOS version is used.) If you have trouble formatting the 4380 as unit 1 (where the 1355 is unit 0), you could try removing the 1355, setting the 4380 as unit 0, and booting from tape to do the format operation. If all else fails, you can get a second MD21. Having different dimensions on different MD21's seems to work fine -- I am typing this reply on a 3/60 with two Micropolis 1355's on one MD21 and two Micropolis 1558's on another. ------------------------------ Date: 26 Apr 1994 14:37:51 UTC From: nsayer@quack.kfu.com (Nick Sayer) Subject: SCSI DATs and Sparcs To: (null) >We're aware that only certain CD-ROM drives can be used with our Sparc >if we want them bootable. I remember >we could use a stock CD-ROM and DAT with our Iris. Depends. Solaris 2 is more likely to be forgiving about weird DATs than Solaris 1. I have an Archive Python and have managed to get it working under both Solaris 2.3 and SunOS 4.1.3. For 2.3 I didn't have to do anything, though since my drive has no compression I must always use the 'l' flag on the drive name (else I get an illegal command sense). For 4.1.3 I had to edit /sys/scsi/targets/st_conf.c and add a new entry describing the Python (else the first access after insertion failed, the drive was slow and had a fixed 512 byte block size). >pete >PS: thanks again for everyone who has been helping us with our sendmail >problems--we are going to try to replace it with smail. Yuck. I would have suggested Sendmail 5.x+IDA. -- Nick Sayer ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Apr 1994 08:11:14 +0200 From: peter@sunflower.sub.org (Peter Dieth) Subject: Suns-at-Home Digest V7 #15 [Really CD-ROMS & DATs --ed] To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu > We're aware that only certain CD-ROM drives can be used with our Sparc > if we want them bootable. We succeeded in connecting the HP DAT drives: o 35470 DDS-1 without DataCompression o 35480 DDS-1 with DataCompression o 1533 DDS-2 with DataCompression o 1553 AutoChanger (6 tapes) including the 1533 drive The HP DAT drives need the following dip switch settings: 3, 6, 7, 8 off others on Further configuration depends on the Version of the OS. SunOS4.1.x You need an entry in /sys/scsi/targets/st_conf.c (kernel fix) to recognize the DAT drive at boot time. SunOS5.3 You need several entries in /kernel/drv/st.conf (kernel fix) to recognize the DAT drive at boot time.
