I'm going to guess that it's a newline problem. Since all the world thinks in MSDOS, the printer is probably waiting for a CR. If you want to use lpd, the 'ms' capability in the printcap file can filter them in. For use with cat or such, you could use sed or perl or whatever to filter in the CR's. If you can find a copy of the PCNFS "unix2dos", it'll do it, too. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Apr 94 19:36:35 BST From: chl@clw.cs.man.ac.uk (Charles Lindsey) Subject: Cleaning of tape drives To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu I have two ancient QUIC-24 tape drives (mounted in Sun shoeboxes along with 141MB SCSI discs). One of them is having some difficulty in reading tapes. I have never tried to clean the heads on either drive. Should this be done, and if so how? Do I poke inside with cotton wool swabs soaked in methylated spirits, or do I have to disassemble the thing to get at the heads, or is it possible to obtain a cleaning cartridge like one does for ordinary cassette recorders? We are using our service provider's (netcom)nameserver for resolving symbolic names to IP addresses. Our problem: despite being able to get mail sent to our domain, we can't send out unless we put a specific address in the hosts file. We have listed the netcom nameservers in our resolv.conf file. When we try nslookup, it works perfectly. But if we try to telnet, we can't resolve the name! I thought nslookup was a test of whether you had contact with the nameserver(!@#!$$!$). Any help on this would be appreciated. peter markiewicz peterm@ewald.mbi.ucla.edu or pete@fire.kspace.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Apr 94 14:40:14 -0400 From: Bob Sutterfield Subject: Internet via Cable TV To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu Date: Thu, 7 Apr 94 15:08:01 PDT From: breyer@pcsi.com (Larry Breyer) Subject: Internet via Cable TV I saw this article in Open Systems Today. To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu Hi! While cleaning out our networks lab, we found a dusty, old Sun-1. I turned it on and it worked!!! The problem is that it is a diskless machine and I dont have a kernel for it. Does anyone out there have a kernel for a Sun-1 that I might get a copy of? Further, does the Sun-1 speak bootp or some prior incarnation? Thanks, Bobby rdk@cc.gatech.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Apr 94 12:32:58 PDT From: Ayub Butt Subject: Which CD player is kosher for a classic To: sun-managers@eecs.nwu.edu Hello net friends... I tried all kinds of CD players with my SPARCclassic and no luck. I get a data overrun/overflow error at the startup time... Yet, this one CD player from Sun works beautifully [ This CD does not say which model/maker it is ]. Can someone please point me to the right CD player that will work with my classic? i.e. Maker and model... I tried the toshiba 3401 E, but that did not work... Thanks Ayub ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
