The drive works fine for reading, it even streams. But when I try to write (using tar, dump, or dd) it gives fatal write errors every few megabytes. (That's an average rate, my record so far was around 35 megabytes. Then again, last saturday I couldn't get more than a single *block* of data without getting errors.) ((The first time I try to write to the tape after booting the Sun, I also get console message about data overruns on the tape drive, then that the Sun esp (= SCSI) driver is 'reverting to slow SCSI cable mode' for that SCSI target. Then the drive grinds away for anywhere from a few seconds to 15 minutes, then I get the fatal write error.)) However, the same drive (and even the same tapes) works perfectly on a 386 box + SCO Unix 4.2 + Adaptec 1522 SCSI card, both reading and writing tapes. This suggests that the tape drive itself must be 'working'. Furthermore, I have no trouble either reading or writing data to my disk, which is *downstream* from the tape in the SCSI chain, which suggests that the SCSI controller and cabling must be 'ok'. Finally, I *can* write (small amounts of) data with the tape drive. The problems only come when I try to (eg) backup a useful-sized file system. Can anyone suggest any jumper settings, software flags, or any other useful things to try besides 'buy a new(er) tape drive'? Does anyone out in net-land have one of these same tape drives talking to a Sun? I am currently running three of these drives (and a 2361) off a pair of 451's. They work just fine. Speaking of which, I have two 451's for sale for $100 each and six 2351's available for $75 each. I can ship the controllers. The disks weigh ~150 lbs. each and are available for Seattle-area you-haul only. --James W. I know the drives are SMD and the controller is ESMD. So I was wondering if there is any problem. --- Well, I've never had this kind of drive, but I found this entry in my format.dat file: (this part is straight from sun) disk_type = "Fujitsu-M2351 Eagle" \ : ctlr = XY450 : fmt_time = 4 \ : ncyl = 840 : acyl = 2 : pcyl = 842 : nhead = 20 : nsect = 46 \ : rpm = 3961 : bpt = 28160 : bps = 595 : drive_type = 0 Since the XY450 and XY451 are no different as far as SunOS is concerned, what you want to do is a supported configuration. If you have proplems, email me and I'll try to help. I just finished setting up a pair of Hitachi DK815's on an XY451 on my 3/110 and might have a couple of clues. (Though I don't have any relevant manuals. :( ) Good Luck, Wm. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jan 94 10:27:32 EST From: Gary Sabot Subject: Maxtor SCSI configuration To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu Can someone tell me which of the the various jumpers on my Sun's Maxtor drive set the SCSI ID number, and how determine a jumper configuration for a particular SCSI number? --gary ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jan 1994 15:53:04 -0800 (PST) From: David - Losen Subject: Pin out for Sun "Mono" 540-1062 To: suns-at-home@harbor.ecn.purdue.edu Hi, Recently I pickup a Sun 19" Mono monitor P/N 540-1062-01 for a really resonable price. This should work just fine. I have both a Fujitsu 2351 and a 2361(?) running on a XY450, and the XY451 is faster/better suited for these disks. But even XY450 works reasonably well. This is an old 2/170 BTW. BTW If anybody wishes to part from a XY451... Wilko ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
