To: suns-at-home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu I am interested in adding an inexpensive, moderate performance 1.0 to 1.4G disk to my SS1+, currently configured with an internal Quantum 105S (sticking), external Fujitsu M2263S 660M, Wangtek 5150ES QIC-150 tape, and Sun X559 CD-ROM, running 4.1.1 (but 4.1.2 or 3 once the disk is going). I imagine I'd be better off with a SCSI-2 drive (future compatibility). I thought I saw a SunExpress ad for a 1.2G drive for about $1350. Raw and "Macintosh" drives can be had at very good prices these days - Hi Tech 805.966.5454 selling Toshiba MK537FB 1.2G unformatted, 12mS, 3 year warranty, with case, $868; APS (Mac) 800.568.2891 selling Quantum 1050S $919, Micropolis 2210 $1189, Quantum 1225S $1189 all in case w/ "intelligent" active termination, 5 year warranty; Seagate Barracuda? Are there any tricks or restrictions on using a non-Sun drive with an SS1+? Do you know of specific models that work (well)? Seagate mumbles about special/hidden Sun-specific bits that must be set to work well with Sun, and almost no manufacturer will say that their drives are compatible with Sun. I've written SCSI drivers, and I know that SCSI is sometimes not quite as compatible as one might wish. I'm interested in similar information about CD-ROM drives. (I have an early Sun CD-ROM which has never worked well and now basically doesn't work at all (usually brings down my system). I can swap the drive unit with Sun (~$275) and hope that was the problem, or put the money into a newer drive like an NEC 3X.) (I'm also looking for a good (university?) nntp/slip connection that's a local call from West LA. My Unix "community" is in San Diego and I now live in Los Angeles.) Thanks very much for your assistance. -David dar@synthesis.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Dec 1993 01:02:09 GMT From: unixsys@ssg.com Subject: For sale: 19" Hitachi monitor & type 4 kybd, cases, manuals To: suns-at-home@harbor.ecn.purdue.edu For sale: 19" Hitachi color monitor Type 4 keyboard and Mouse Systems optical mouse with pad Frame buffer VGA card with docs and driver (for 386i, *not* for PC's!)
