I'm using Solaris 4.3.1 with a 150M QIC tape drive, and I want to back everything up. The man page for dump contains a 150M tape example: dump 0cdstfu 1000 700 18 /dev/rst0 file_system_name but the tape length of 700 and the density do not match what it says on my DC 6150 tape cartridges. But when I tried the example it sort of worked (I say sort of because it only put 140M on each tape.) How are the numbers that you give to dump derived from the actual numbers? Is 140M the usable capacity of a 150M tape? Also, if only a portion of a tape is used, can I start a second dump if I use /dev/nrst0 and reduce the tape length arg to the next dump call by the percentage of tape left, as reported by the previous dump? Finally, is dump the right thing to use for complete backups and for incrementals? Is there any way to get compress into the act so more fits on a tape? In fact, my outboard Archive tape is totally flaky now, unlike the situation when this stuff was hooked to a Sun 4/110 VME machine. This jury rig worked OK on a 4/110, but it isn't cutting it with the SCSI-2 on the SS-2. Any suggestions are appreciated! On the other hand if I choose a bourne shell for the new user, that message do not appear, but I still can't run openwin. Do you have some ideas that can help solving the problem of add new users with the possibility of running openwindows? I had noticed the jumper block near the SIMM's before, but as I had been told several times (by my misinformant :-) ) that the jumper I needed to touch was within 5" of the BNC connector, I pretty much had ignored it. :-( Looking at my jumper block it was even labelled. i.e. 4M 8M 12M 16M etc. and one jumper for something labelled with an EXT marking. (There is one more jumper that is labelled for type of frame buffer) That was the one. My annoying Ethernet "no carrier" messages have disapeared :-). Now I'm off to try a LAN between my SUN and a PC... :-) ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
