To: suns-at-home-request@ea.ecn.purdue.edu MACHINE: An early Sun-3/160 with the original "sc" SCSI controller driving a SCSI-to-MFM controller and a pair of 70Mb disks. Does anybody know whether a Macintosh SCSI disk can be attached directly to the cable from the "sc" SCSI board? Can the system boot from a Mac disk? -Andrew Luebker- aahvdl@eye.psych.umn.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 May 93 00:19:11 -0700 From: Rick Lindsley Subject: SCSI disconnect? To: suns-at-home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu Is it a software, or hardware mod (or both) to get SCSI disconnect to work on my Sun 3 system? The most obvious sign that SCSI disconnect is working is that you can skip a file on your tape without the whole system pausing to wait for it. More generally, it's returning control to the operating system before a SCSI operation completes. It can also speed up backups if disk accesses can be happening while tape writes are happening -- the tape will actually stream and stay streaming. I know I had this working on a 3/50 in a previous job, but don't remember if it took new hardware, new software, or both.
