I have a Maxtor LXT-200S as the second drive in my 1+ pizza box that is doing unconscionable things. The problems are as follows: - unable to format disk - can `newfs' the disk but eventually bad blocks are fatal: >Jan 11 22:26:57 immagini vmunix: sd3c: Error for command 'read' >Jan 11 22:26:57 immagini vmunix: sd3c: Error Level: Fatal >Jan 11 22:26:57 immagini vmunix: sd3c: Block 64, Absolute Block: 64 >Jan 11 22:26:57 immagini vmunix: sd3c: Sense Key: Media Error >Jan 11 22:26:57 immagini vmunix: sd3c: Vendor 'MAXTOR' error code: 0x11 I am able to partition the disk - made it sd3c. My system is a 1+, 40Mb Ram, currently am running of the Sun207 MB disk set up as sd1{a,g,h}. I have specified the Maxtor as: >1. sd3 at esp0 slave 0 > sd3: based on recommendations at the Maxtor 800 #. I format as follows: - select 1 (above) - do defect and extract then commit (all ok): >defect> print > num cyl hd bfi len sec > 1 6 3 6180 > 2 7 3 5781 > 3 65 2 13882 > 4 182 2 17919 > 5 671 2 14882 > 6 751 2 2995 > 7 811 2 3705 > 8 898 1 10589 > 9 1200 2 6525 > 10 1274 1 13512 > 11 1289 3 10812 > 12 6 3 5795 > 13 7 3 5217 > 14 65 2 13309 > 15 182 2 17355 > 16 671 2 14465 > 17 751 2 2905 > 18 811 2 3483 > 19 898 1 10419 > 20 1200 2 6373 > 21 1274 1 13309 > 22 1289 3 10419 > 23 13 3 12731 > 24 0 0 15 >total of 24 defects. > >defect> - but format goes kerbonkers: >format> format >Ready to format. Formatting cannot be interrupted >and takes 6 minutes (estimated). Continue? y >Beginning format. Is there a defect with the disk or have a committed a bit booboo? Many thanks in advance for any suggestions before I plead with Maxtor for a new disk. Blumenau) Subject: SCSI on 4/260 To: suns-at-home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu I want to add SCSI devices to my sun 4/260. The tape drive (1/4") is a SCSI device and the SCSI cable connects to the tape controller board and has another connection. I am looking for anyone who has done this before or is familiar with the 260. Is there anything other than connecting the other SCSI devices to the cable that needs to be done ? Also, do I have to dismanle the tower to get access to the tape controller board, or is there an easier way ? ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
