To: suns-at-home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu The radio just reminded me about daylight saving time adjustment tonight (at least in Ontario). I recall last year that SunOS 4.1 cron messed up when the clock changed, and refused to run any events that happened during that missed hour. I thought I'd remind everyone the solution is to restart cron on Sunday morning :-) -- :!mcr!: | The postmaster never | So much mail, Michael Richardson | resolves twice. | so little time. To: Suns-at-Home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu Hi- My company typically has, at any time, some quantity of spare, used Sun equipment around available for sale. This is either equipment that we've upgraded from or equipment excess to our client's needs that we've agreed to help them get rid of. Lately we've ended up with a bunch of headless/keyboardless Sun 3/50's and Sun 3/60's. It seems that some of our clients, after upgrades, wanted to hang onto the equipment that might wear out, so they could replace things themselves. Regardless, we now have a bunch of marginally useful CPUs in good working condition. I presume that anyone who wanted to take advantage of Sun's upgrade program but didn't have any Sun 3's to upgrade could come out ahead using these & locating 3rd party keyboards & monitors. Or, plug an ascii terminal into the serial port & you've got a Unix box. Whatever ... We were thinking of asking $350 for the 3/50's & $600 for the 3/60's (w/ 0 meg). Our hardware guy has the most up to date info on what we have available at any time. Feel free to give him a call. He can be reached most easily through his "beeper" at: (408) 983-3671 After dialing this number & hearing the tone & instructions, punch in your phone number (with area code). He's pretty good about returning calls. -brad albom Software Engineering Solutions, Inc (Not related to Sun Micro) Office: (415) 969-0141 - Probably get a secretary FAX : (415) 961-3050 - Probably get a high pitched tone Office: (707) 552-5248 - Probably get our machine email : brada@eng.sun.com - Best Bet (Tuesday-Thursday) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Mar 92 13:26:18 -0500 From: att!bromo!wtr Subject: Sun 3/160 and misc things for sale To: att!orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu!Suns-at-Home Well, this will teach me for posting without reading the FM a little closer <:-) First off, that "Sun-2" monitor I advertised is in actuallity a Sun-2/Sun-3 monitor, and is no longer for sale. "How did I find this out" you ask? Well last night, i went out and bought a "Sun-3" monitor, and had a nice long talk with the guy who sold it to me. He had lots of hardware documentation for various Suns, including the 2/50 and 3/160. It turns out that both use the same monitor, Sun part# 540-1062-01. It uses ECL levels on (i think this is right now) the video signal inputs and TTL levels on HSYNC and VSYNC. So I bought the monitor anyway, and opened it up when I got home. Turns out that both monitors were *identical* (Philips M19P114A/6102) ======================= The saga of getting a 3/160 working in a Sun-2/50 chassis continues, and I'd like to ask for some help. So far, I have: - Pulled the 2/50 motherboard out and put in a 3/160. - left the 4Meg expansion plus SCSI board from the 2/50 in, but disabled the 4Meg by removing four jumpers on the board. - Bootstrapped and loaded SunOS 4.1.1 from the SCSI tape drive onto a small (60 Meg) harddrive. This was using the Adaptec 4000 SCSI->MFM drive controller in the shoebox. So far, I have not: - Gotten the (*&^%!) display to work. All of the above work was done with a terminal on ttya. The monitor just stays black. The Sun-3 keyboard I have hooked up seems to work fine, since I can set it up to take input from it and output to ttya. So what to you all think? Here's a couple things I have noticed... - The 3/160 motherboard was shipped witout an ID PROM! (grrr....) When the machine powers up, it cannot find it's ethernet address. Would the failure of this test prevent the initialization of the video? Is there anywhere I can get a substitute PROM? - Pin-9 on the video connector is labled as GND in the documentation. However, the cable I am using does not have Pin-9 hooked to anything. This seemed to work fine on the 2/50. Does the 3/160 video driver require this signal? I don't have access to the schematics for the 3/160. - The Sun documentation indicateds that the 1152x900 monochrome output could be modified to a resolution of 1024x1024. This took a PAL change and a shunt on the motherboard. It seemed that the same monitor would be used, with VSIZE adjusted. - how could one tell if that change was made to a board? I'm going to see if I scrounge a scope from lab and check out the video output at the connector. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
