I've just purchased a Sun 3/110 8M 19" Color 141M/60Mtape machine running SunOS 4.0.1 for $1200. This price also includes a SunOS 4.1.1 distribution tape(s) and the SunOS 4.1.1 system admin manual. The only gotcha is that one of the serial ports isn't working correctly. The man selling it said that he thought it was the rs232 chip and that it should be fixable. I'm also looking for suggestions for making the SunOS 4.1.1 installation smaller. What can I remove/compress for a non-network system. I was considering removing OpenLook and using X11R4(without sun's NeWS additions). Well, anyone know about the serial port?, what to install for a minimal system? Help out a truly new system admin. How much more should I allow for X if I don't use OpenWindows? Emacs and Gcc? Obviously these amounts vary depending on just what installation options are selected; I'd like to get some idea of the general ranges to be expected.
