I put it on an air mattress upside down (so the fan faces up), with the shoebox rightside up on top. The air mattress is one of those ultra-light ones you put under your sleeping bag, and can be obtained from camping stores. (Disclaimer: I can't be responsible for your system if you follow my advice; mine will probably be a smoking ruin when I get home from work.) -david ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Jun 91 15:09:03 -0500 From: att!bromo!wtr Subject: Upgrading a 2/50 to a 3/xx To: att!orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu!Suns-at-Home Good Afternoon SAH-ers I currently have a Sun-2/50 at home with a SCSI shoebox. I has a 1 Meg motherboard and a 4 Meg expansion board with the SCSI controller. I am looking into upgrading the existing machine to a Sun-3. What are my options? I have read on the net that the 2/50 could be upgraded to a 3/50 by just swapping in the 3/50 motherboard. I have also heard that a 3/160 motherboard can be put in the 2/50 chassis. I doubt that the memory expansion card would work, but what about the SCSI controller? Could the memory be disabled and the SCSI controller still work? Has anyone performmed the above upgrades? What problems did you run into? I am trying to make a decision withing the next couple weeks to see if I should try to upgrade, or just go ahead and look into getting a complete 3/50 system. What is the going price on a 4-Meg 3/50? 8-Meg? Email direct to me and I'll summarize, or just post back to the list. Thanks for the help. -bill rankin wtr@bromo.att.com ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
