Since I have no disk for the others, they are not currently being used. Some questions: 1. What would be the cheapest way to get a reasonable amount of disk for system #3? Note that the external cabinet for system #1 has the power supply and room for another disk. I might prefer a more modern SCSI shoebox, but fear these won't work with SunOS 3.5. 2. What would be the cheapest way to Ethernet the three systems together? Some kind of Ethernet multiplexor, I imagine, bypassing transcievers (which I am lacking). Would love to find one that has only 3 or 4 ports. I have no use for the GPIB board, nor the Ikon NSC adaptor. If anyone out there has a use for them, let me know. What I do need to complete the setup: 1 Multibus ethernet controller (either Sun-2 or 3com) + cable and connector 2 Sky FP boards If you have any of the above gathering dust, please contact me. They advertise in Computer Shopper. The drive is either $149 or $199, I forget which, and the controller is about $100. Then all you need are cables, a box, and a power supply. That's quite a bit cheaper than the 150 MB drive. I did see an ad for 150MB Archive Vipers for about $400 from IME in Massachusetts, but that was awhile ago, and IME ads since don't include them, so maybe they sold out. Both places handle liquidation stock. Myself, I just ordered a 150MB drive and a 660MB H-P disk from Apunix. They should arrive this week. If I recall correctly, the delivered price is $2952. The tape is $1049 plus shipping. So I'm paying about $250 for the box, cables, and somebody's labor putting them together. I know, deep down inside, it's essentially identical to the Multibus Sun-2's, but it has some funky connectors for the keyboard and mouse that I'd like to get pinouts for, and besides, it'd be good to have the docs just for historical value (which is mostly why I have the thing in the first place). I notice that a number of the Multibus slots do not have P2 connectors. What boards can or can't go in the non-P2 slots? Speaking of historical value, does anyone know what the earliest rev. of SunOS is that will run on the 100U? I tried 0.4(beta) on my 2/120, and that didn't seem to work. If I'm going to have this around as a piece of history, I want it in a state it would have been all those years ago... :-) Thanks! --Pat. ------------------------------ Date: 19 Feb 91 19:10:06 PST (Tue) From: Marc Frajola Subject: Help requested: Setting up SLIP and dialup TCP/IP networks To: Suns-at-Home%orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu@RELAY.CS.NET Hi... In my local area (Portland, Oregon), a group of people is trying to setup a full-time community based online TCP/IP network. Most machines will connect via V.42bis style serial modems. Some people will have ethernet backbones in their house, but will connect to the "rest" of the network through one connection. Right now, we're having trouble seeing how we're going to handle routing issues with different sized/architectured subnets. We already have a class C network assignment, but it is becoming obvious that we will likely need several class Cs or a class B. If anybody out there has implemented a dialup IP type network in their area or knows how we would setup dynamic routing between many home-owned systems, I'd like to hear about it... Keeping in mind that SLIP is point-to-point, does a machine with two separate SLIP connections need to have each SLIP session on separate subnets to properly gateway packets from one SLIP network to the other? I am interested in knowing if there any SLIP packages tested on SunOS 4.1.1. The Sun users in this network will be mostly using Sun-3s, but soon there will be some Sun-4s that want to be on the network as well. If SLIP for SunOS 4.1.1 is available for anonymous ftp, where can I get it? Also, can anybody easily summarize the difference between PPP and SLIP? Are there other packages for asynchronous TCP/IP? Any help/comments/suggestions would be appreciated... Last year Sun sued and won against a company who had that exact information. I have the chance to pick up a Sun 3/60 with 3 170meg drives, 19 inch color monitor, 12 meg of core and a 60 meg tape drive. How much is this stuff worth at street value? Should I go for it? The guy is willing to trade :) all of this for a 386 system with 80 meg. He is really into MSDOS (Poor guy:) I know the Sun-3 is basically dead for OS upgrades past 4.1.1 but I still think this might be a pretty good deal. Any comments appreciated. I will summarize if enough response.
