The PSU is a "Boschert" SMPS with the main 5v output rated at 100A. The failure is in the main 5v output. I found that one of the two large capacitors on the output had blown it's guts and tried replacing it, this did not cure the problem. I have to admit that SMPS technology is beyond my electronics knowhow, so I will probably try to replace the PSU. I may be able to find another ex-equipment SMPS that is suitable, however 5V@100A seems overkill. Does anyone know what minimum current rating of 5v supply will suffice to drive a 2/120 (CPU, 2*Memory boards, SCSI, Console, Xylogics SMD)? My guestimate would be no more than about 45A. Alternatively, is anyone familiar with troubleshooting the Boschert (now Computer Products, I believe) SMPS? -Syngen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jan 91 19:45:59 PST From: tessi.UUCP!exc!markh@tektronix.TEK.COM (Mark A. As a matter of fact I have two on my machine here now. I just use the 50-pin-D bulk style connectors and ribbon cable, keeping the cables as short as possible for RF limitations. I try to use standard sun type (round) cables where-ever possible. I have been doing this for the last 5 years and have had no problems. The only thing to watch is that the terminator power DOES NOT go through the cables that you create (pin 64, I beleive), as drives all supply +5v and that pin is grounded on a 3/60. Re: help Needed With tape (st) and Boot Errors The error that you are running into is one that I have seen before. the tape decks that you are trying to attach are strapped to come up default in QIC-24 mode and the tapes that you are attempting to load are in QIC-11. That is for sure the cause of the error message "st: error 96A0". The first drive is not a bootable device for that CPU but the second one should be fine. You need to get a manual on the Wangtek and find out how to switch the default format back to QIC-11. It should be one jumper on the controller attached to the tape drive. I am sorry, but I do not know what that jumper is (if any). On an archive it was GG. Re: Questions about SLIP. Here here!! I have been trying to do this same thing starting with the 4.0 distribution and 4.1 OS (now 4.1.1) and I have done mostly the same things that you have, except I was never able to get any type of slip connection made. I used the slip-tip program rather than sliplogin on the local side, but was unable to pushd the slip driver from the kernel. When you figure out how to do this, please publish complete step-by-step instructions. I am sure that we are not the only two confused people out here. Better yet, drop me a line and we can compare notes a little closer. I would like to get either this or the point to point stuff up. =========================================================================== Mark Holm ..tektronix!ogcvax!cvedc!exc!markh Exceptions ..tektronix!tessi!exc!markh 126 NE Grant Phone (503)648-8307 Hillsboro, Oregon 97124 Messages only until after 6:00 PM One cannot accomplish the impossible, without first attempting the absurd! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jan 91 14:19:22 -0800 From: Jim Lick Subject: Suns-at-Home Digest V4 #2 To: Suns-at-Home@ecn.purdue.edu RE: Loopback for fat Ethernet Yes, it is an easy matter to make a simple loopback with a 15 pin connector and 3 wires. I don't have the exact wiring available at the moment, but if anyone needs it I'll dig it out and post. I have used it on a standalone workstation to test it's ethernet, and we lived for about 2 months with it hooked up to the out port on our multiport while we were waiting to be hooked up in new offices last spring. I also have this spiffy 2/50, quite nice looking, much smaller, better keyboard/monitor, more RAM, SCSI, etc....I'm trying to run a BBS, and it works OK, but the fans bug me (this is in my bedroom), and the 2/120 SMD drive (160M Fujisu) is kinda large....all and all I'd just rather have the 2/50 running than the 2/120, and I'm out of cash so I can't have both. I did pick up some ethernet xcevers, cables, cards, etc, but I can't get the 2/50 to work with the 2/120 either (I wouldn't mind this solution...could put the 2/120 in the basement.). I've got a loopback enet plug (one came with every one of our decstations, you might look around your plant) that lets the interface be ifconfiged without getting stray no signal messages. But it's not required by any means. Are you trying to set up a transcieverless homemade home ethernet with 15-pin cables? If so, I'd be interested in your methods and ultimate results. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jan 91 21:43:14 EST From: rs@ai.mit.edu (Robert E. There seems to be something magical about the third time it goes for the tape. I have this gut feeling that the tape isn't rewinding all the way back to the beginning before it starts rolling forward to search for (0,0,4), but I can't be sure. Has anyone seen this happen before? I did all the obvious things (cleaned the heads on the drive, treated the contacts on all cables and the boards with contact cleaner, checked for the presence of the CC jumper on the Archive's PC board, and tried reading [NOT booting] the tapes on another machine [they are fine]). Obviously, the tape drive is substantially working, or I wouldn't be able to fire up diag, but I'm really stumped as to why it isn't *completely* working. Sun says that rev. R roms are the latest rev level for my machine, and I went over all the jumper and switch settings with the Sun guy on the phone.
