DeJulio" Subject: FYI: sun2 keyboards To: Sun2-folks , Suns-at-Home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu These Sun2 keyboards are a pain to service. I just replaced one of the keys on one of my Sun2 keyboards with one from a spare keyboard somone gave me. After removing all of the screws, you're faced with a metal plate with little rectangular metal bits holding it on instead of screws. The only way to remove the internal parts of a key (ie. all but the keycap) seems to be to take a pair of pliers, twist all the little metal thingies and remove the metal plate, and then push the key out the back (by removing the keycap and squeezing the part that's left while pushing). I was able to do all of this without doing any observable damage to the keyboard, and I removed a golf-ball sized collection of dust while I was at it. Important: when you put it back together, make sure you twist all the little metal things back into place, or the keys won't make contact. Another nifty thing is that the screws used to hold the keyboard together are the same screws that are used everywhere else in the Sun2. I had run out of them, but now I have enough. If anyone out there has a broken keyboard, it might be fixable. If not, parts can certainly be scavenged from it. -- Doug DeJulio ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
