Ever wanted to add a low cost printer but found out that they only have a Centronics parallel interface, or wanted to add a high speed laser printer but couldn't because serial ports couldn't handle the required thruput? Ever needed support of ALL modem and control signal lines to connect a modem? Uninet Peripherals has the answer to these and other questions. It's called SLAT. Use the SCSI bus to transparently add 4 or 8 RS232 serial ports and a Centronics parallel interface to these and other machines: Sun 3, Sun 4 including Sparcstation, Decstation, Vaxstation, Macintosh. SLAT offers these features: o serial and parallel ports supported through the standard tty driver o no new drivers required, no kernel rebuilds necessary o uses only 1 SCSI address o co-exists peacefully with other SCSI devices such as disks and tapes o supports all modem control signals o supports input/output xon/xoff throttling at the SLAT level o uses less CPU time than serial ports in the workstation o serial thruput of over 20K characters per second o saves ethernet bandwidth (much more precious than SCSI bandwidth) o uses less than 5% of SCSI bandwidth at 20K chars per second o SCSI xfer rate over 2.5 Mbytes per second o uart baud rates to 76.8K and beyond o support of arbitrary baud rates (can you say MIDI ?) Does anyone reading this have pointers to where such could easily (read: cheaply) be obtained? Also, I'm in need of a hardware manual or description, since the ports marked SIO-S1 and the like on the back of it (SCSI?) are not at all the sort of things I'm used to seeing on the backs of newer Suns. Any pointers or info would be appreciated, thanks! - Eric Gullichsen uunet!acad!fire!egullich ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Nov 89 11:57:22 EST From: dmuntz@caen.engin.umich.edu (Dan Muntz) Subject: Sun 2/120 Disks and more To: suns-at-home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu I'd like to put a ~300 meg SCSI drive in my Sun 2/120 and I'd like to hear about any systems out there that are configured this way (what brand/model of drive, what controller, switch settings, etc.) I was also wondering if there is any way to make the video board in a Sun 2/120 "happy" in the far right slot in the cage. If I move it to any slot but the one it's in (2 from the right I believe) then it won't work. There are some dip switches and jumpers on the board. -Dan Muntz dmuntz@caen.engin.umich.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 89 14:25:45 PST From: tessi!joey@nosun.West.Sun.COM (Joe Pruett) Subject: Xylogics 451 in 2/120? To: Suns-at-Home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu Does anybody know if a xy451 can be used in a 2/120? I've tried a number of jumper options, but keep getting lost interrupts. Thanks for any help... ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
