There's a filter on the fan at the back of a 2/120. The filter is bolted to the fan on the inside of the case. I never noticed it until today when all the data on the back SCSI drive went away because it overheated.... The filter was blocked completly with dirt and grime. To clean the filter, take off the side panel on the right (viewed from the back), remove the 4 bolts holding the fan in, and the bolt that holds the finger guard on the inside to the fan. The filter is the black grimy thing wedged between the inside finger guard and the fan. Wash it out, put it back in, and power it back up. Good luck. bob bownes ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 89 06:40:39 MDT From: Bob Knight Subject: Repair sources for a Xylogics 450 To: Suns-at-Home@orchestra.ecn.purdue.edu Can anyone point me to a reasonable (eg. cheap, quick and competent) place that can repair a sick XY450? Thanks in advance, Bob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 89 09:16:21 EDT From: elijah!tarsa Subject: Repair sources for a Xylogics 450 To: Bob Knight Bob, It used to cost $325.00 to have Xylogics completely repair and refurbish a damaged XY450. I had it done about two years ago and do not think that the price would have changed much. It is a 21 day turnaround, but you can pay extra buck to get 10 day. Their number is (617)272-8140, ask for customer service. They probably can't be beat for reliable work and it is warrantied for some amount of time (90 days, I think--you'd have to ask) as well. In general, you can always rely on the original manufacturer to refurbish broken equipment and you should check into what they charge. In the case of mass-market items, like disk and tape drives, there is often a third-party that does it cheaper, but you need to know the manufacturers charges to determine that. For instance, Micropolis will completely refurbish a 1325 (80M) disk with head problems for $450.00, but there are third parties that will do it for $250. And then there are folks out there who will charge you $1500 to repair an XY450. Hope this is helpful.
