If you are using DNS then check in "/etc/resolv.conf", but it sounds more like you might have a netmask or default router set incorrectly. What is the IP address of the system you are trying to ping? What is your system's IP address? Are they in the same network segment and the same network number but different host numbers without a router in between? What message do you get when you try to ping? Are you pinging the IP address? Does "ifconfig -a" match the settings you believe you have set? Don Woodward www.sunsunsun.net - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Apr 00 19:31:40 PDT From: perryh@pluto.rain.com (Perry Hutchison) Subject: PC-NFS troubles To: suns-at-home@net-kitchen.com I am trying to use PC-NFS 3.5 to access a couple of 3/60's from PC's running DOS 6.22. It works fine if I use a 3Com 3C507 or 3C509, but I can't get an Intel EtherExpress 16 (also known as an Intel 8/16 LAN adapter) to work. All three cards use NDIS drivers, so CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and PROTOCOL.INI are extremely similar from one card to another. There are no error messages or unexpected output differences while loading the drivers and setting up PC-NFS. When trying to use the Intel card, the first sign of trouble is that \LANMAN\NETBIND takes too long, like it's waiting until something times out, but NFSRUN claims that PC-NFS has been installed successfully. I then get "Server not responding" when trying to map drives, and "can't open connection" when attempting telnet. I am using the same I/O address, RAM window, and IRQ on the (failing) Intel card as on the (working) 3C507, so I don't think it's a resource conflict. The card passes its diagnostics, so I think the hardware is OK. That leaves a driver or configuration problem as the most likely cause. If anyone has gotten PC-NFS 3.5 to work with an Intel 8/16 card, could you send me the Softset configuration settings, PROTOCOL.INI file, and NDIS driver image? Alternatively, does anyone have a 3C507 or two that they'd like to sell? - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 17:55:29 -0400 From: adh@an.bradford.ma.us (Sandwich Maker) Subject: pinging to my LAN To: Suns-at-Home@net-kitchen.com "From: Craig Dewick " "Do you have a default route set up? The CD says it'll work with the SPARCbook 1, 2, and 3 (and I've used it before on a SB 3GX about 1.5 years ago), but I can't get this one to work. I was finally able to get the le0 interface plumbed, addressed, and marked "UP". That last part was the one that I had previously stumbled on. I can now not only ping my other LAN computers, but surf the net as well. I was a little disappointed at the speed of the Sparc 2 w/Wietek upgrade chip, but it's a fine training machine for the home. Now I will have to set my sights on something like a Sparc 10 or 20 to get some real work done. Until then, I'll just keep chugging along. Now to configure my mail client. Back to the books.... Although I recall from a Sun course 'pluto numbers' (pn) which represented.. can't quite remember, it's early. I asked the instructor why "pluto", apparently this is because it's the furthest planet from the Sun. OK, useless info. It has sun colors but no real markings. The top comes off to expose 3 sbus slots in the middle and then the usual scsi, aui ethernet, keyboard and audio connectors. It also has 5 large fans in the back. IT has 30 memory slots for 30 pin simms. Can anybody tell me what this is? Is this a server of some kind, and what processors does it use???
