I'm running SunOS 4.1.4. AFAIK, SunOS 4.1.4 doesn't support DNS, except through NIS. 4.1.3 certainly didn't. If you want to use DNS directly, and I would strongly recommend that you do, you need to replace libc with one containing appropriate resolver libraries. When I ran 4.1.3 I used a package called "resolv+" which works well. Regards, Hugh. I had the same problem when i first got my ss2. I have an LX and a Sun Monitor and a 2GB hard drive and there is no problem with it. I'd suggest trying another monitor if you could. Is the sun and the monitor running througha surge suppressor? There might be power problems causing the monitor to go bad. james z. - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 14:55:46 +0100 From: Bob Hoekstra Subject: Suns-at-Home Digest V12 #29 To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com Howard Huntley wrote: > > I wonder what application software does Sun at home users run on there systems?? > > If a new user wanted to learn the sun system what application software > would you recommend to get him started. > > I have always wondered how many subscribers there are to this news letter?? Three non-trivial questions. In fact, one might even query the definition of "application software". I would say that the software used depends why you want to run a Sun box at home. For me it is the most reliable hardware to serve my in-house network (there are other Unix hardware vendors that also produce excellent boxes) and it allows me to do/try/test/develop/break things I cannot do/etc on my clients' machines (I am a freelance Solaris sysadmin). Others may run a Sun box for the opportunity to learn Unix, Solaris, SunOS (or even Linux) and for the anachrophiles it may just be the satisfaction of running a very old but good computer (witness the number of pre-Sun 4 machines that regularly pop-up here). Free software I use: - Apache http server - Netscape browser and mail tool - Lynx and Hotjava as browsers for testing only - Star Office word procssor, spreadsheet, etc - Development: Gnu C/C++ compiler, Perl, Tcl/Tk - Samba, so I can act as a PC server - VNC (see http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/) - Bash as a better interactive shell - Vim as a better vi - Lots more less important stuff: software comes and goes on my machine all the time. Non-free software: - Solaris 7 at the moment - Dyalog APL interpreter (the best) - Nothing else of great importance -- -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GO/! d- s++:+ a+ C++(++++) US+++$ P+ L+ E--- W++ N++ w--- O- V- PS+ PE- Y+ PGP- t+ 5++ X+ R* tv+ b+ DI++ D G e(*) h++/-- r+++ y? ------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------ ----------------------------------------------------- Bob Hoekstra: APL & Unix Consultant Tele: +44 (0)1483 771028 (Home) +44 (0)410 562345 (Mobile) Web site: http://www.khamsin.demon.co.uk Home email: Bob.Hoekstra@khamsin.demon.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
