If you want to stay with SunOS, SunOS 4.1.1 and the U1 patch are available via ftp; take a look at http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~oldkit/sun3_archive.htmld/ for details. Sun seems to be officially looking the other way with regards to this site (and cheers to them for doing so!) since the Sun 3 family has been out of production for so long. If you don't mind trying something new, NetBSD is also an excellent choice; my Sun at home is a SPARCstation 1+ running NetBSD/SPARC, and I'm quite happy with it. As for what's best, I'd rather see a classic machine kept alive as a complete system, rather than relegated to being an X terminal hung off of something newer and faster, but that's just my opinion...the important thing is to enjoy your system, regardless of what you choose to do with it. Seielstad) Subject: A Followup on adding a disk To: suns-at-home@net-kitchen.com Back in January I posted a submission asking for a little assistance with a problem I was having adding a new disk to a Sun 3/60 I have. (text included below) I wanted to follow up and let everyone know that not only did I solve the problem I had, but the solution was right under my nose ... in the SAH Archives! Plus, I figured maybe it would be a good idea to re-print the solution just in case someone lurking might be having a similar problem. I will apologize in advance for the length of the post since there really isn't much hope of condensing it and maintaining it's usefulness. I certainly wasn't overwhelmed with replies but Dale Carstensen and Rick Leir EPS sent their suggestions for solving the problem, which I would like to thank them for again. Despite Dale's & Rick's suggestions I was still unable to resolve the problem and set aside the project for some other time. This past weekend out of boredom and also a lack of anything important to accomplish, I spent a couple hours wandering through the SAH Archives on the web. Mainly, just selecting topics that looked interesting and doing a little informal learning without a real purpose in mind. For some reason that escapes me now, I pulled up the SAH Digest Vol. 6, Issue 12 of May 4th, 93 and found a reference to a couple of messages within the digest that were of a similar vein ... namely having trouble adding a disk to a 3/60! I would like to toss out a big thank you to Andy Nguyen and Peter L. Wargo, if they are still reading this list, for having this problem way back in '93, solving the problem, explaining the nuances of the SunOS kernel and posting the solutions (Andy and Pete, I toyed with sending you e-mail ... but I wasn't sure your 5 year old e-mail address would still be valid.) Well I upgraded my SPARCstation 1 to an IPX, without problem, however I have a couple of little questions about my new machine (I keeping the 1 to use as a something). First I noticed my IPX was produced in the UK, was or is this normal for this class of machine. It certainly travelled a distance in its time having gone to the US and then back to the UK. As a side note do Sun use Air or Sea to transport these beasties? Secondly it has got the BABT approval (UK Telephone approval) symbol printed on the Motherboard, however no-one seems to know why. You need Mark Henderson's FAQ on Sun NVRAM. I don't remember about the IPC, however for at least some sun4c machines the NVRAM is indeed replaceable (although with enough hassle that I don't entirely blame Sun for discouraging the practice). And yes, once the clock stops, the NVRAM values will not hold out much longer. You can, if your 3/60 has net access (mine does not)get all the OS 4.1.1 files to make a set of boot tapes. They also have 4.1.1_U1 update files. It is the Sun Archive site at; http://doener.unix-ag.uni-kl.de Heiko Krupp has much information on the Sun3s at that site. There are all the 4.1.1 files along with the shell scripts to write them to tape. Will I have to replace my motherboard in order to have a The NVRAM chip in an IPC is a socketed part. So you can replace it without any problems. Replacing _only_ the batteries is not really possible, unless you are prepared to do some sawing and soldering. Can be done, no problem, done it 5 times now for our IPCs. But getting a replacement chip might be the easiest route. > working clock? Also, should I expect my NVRAM values to start > disappearing? I don't recall seeing this problem mentioned here before, Yes, you might loose the NVRAM contents. Better write 'm down while you have the chance. Especially if you run software with license keys locked to the node id. I have a SS20 with two monitors. Any recommendations? In particular, I am curious about "shutdown software" that might come with any UPS -- what exactly does that do? Could it do it for the Sun Unixes? tnx, -f - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 22:06:46 +0100 From: Kevan Heydon Subject: Watchdog Resets on a 1+ To: suns-at-home@net-kitchen.com Hi, I do some voluntary work for a local FreeNet and we have a sick SPARCstation 1+ that I have been asked to take a look at because I have a few Suns (SS2, 2x4/110, 2/120 + 3/50 soon) here at home. The 1+ is doing watchdog resets after being on for a number of hours. They happen for no apparent reason, i.e. when the machine is idle with nobody logged into it. The console reports: Watchdog reset Data Access Exception Watchdog reset Data Access Exception Watchdog reset Data Access Exception Watchdog reset Data Access Exception Watchdog reset Memory address not aligned Watchdog reset Memory address not aligned Watchdog reset Memory address not aligned Watchdog reset Memory address not aligned These final messages seem to repeat indefinately but at no great speed. When in this state the only response I can get from the machine is getting to the 'ok' prompt by sending a break signal from the console. Has anybody got any ideas of what may be happening? Should I be looking for some dodgy memory, or a flakey hard disk, or some other more major problem like a motherboard that is on its way out?
