I think the discrepancies in sector and track count arise from the OS, the controller, and the drive all attempting to do bad-sector mapping and/or replacement. Based on my experience, you should count yourself lucky to get an XT8xxxE to work at all with an MD21 under SunOS. I have several, and have managed to find the proper drive jumper settings for only one of them. There are several revisions of the XTxxxE circuit board around, with the jumpers in different places which are not always well labelled, and IIRC even the big datasheet archive that I retrieved from Maxtor's faxback a few years back did not show all of them. This is most unfortunate, since AFAIK the XT8xxx drives are second only to the XT4xxx series in reliability. - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 09:07:04 +0200 (CEST) From: frank@sun01.ccii.unipi.it Subject: *NIX and Hard Drives To: Robert Blackshaw Hi, I have four drives XT8760E working with the MD21, all are jumpered for 52 sector/track since it seems that MD21 can't handle a larger value. There isn't much to configure on a MD21, you can find all the dip switch setting of the MD21 on the Sun HW FAQ. As for the XT8760E you can try a different (and surely better) sec/track value (like 54 for example) but I couldn't low level format the disk with the MD21 with that setting. Also you'd need a solaris format utility (SunOs one doesn't work if the disk isn't already low level formatted with the same settings) or a PC scsi card with the low level format utility in order to low level format the disk if isn't already formatted. However I have another question, how to set an IBM 0671E (314MB ESDI) for working with the MD21? Has anyone ever used such a drive? The machine is running SunOS 4.1.1 and I got the root password with it, but not the boot tapes. So in order to get the system running again when it crashes hard, I was thinking of getting an other OS for it like NetBSD or just use it as an X-terminal off a Linux machine. Can anyone give me some advise on what is best to do.Futhermore, I'm thinking of replacing the shoebox with an 1 GB SCSI HD and a CD-Rom drive in a smaller case. And does anyone know of a vendor of older Sun equipment in Holland?? This is because I definitely need to replace the keyboard that came with it (it's a graphical keyboard and is driving me mad). What keypress do I need? Whenever I try to run openwin, I get a kernal panic, so I'm assuming it's already running perhaps. Also, to reload Solaris 2.4, do I absolutely HAVE to have a CD-ROM that supports 512 byte blocks? The details: CG3 part number 501-1718 (is this the right bus-type for a Classic?) I don't have the monitor part number, but it's the same as the one I'm using with the internal CG3 in the Classic, so monitor<->frame buffer compatibility shouldn't be an issue. This system is running Solaris 2.6 and has 40 megs of ram, though I expect that I'll bump it up to 96 at some time. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated, I'll summarize to the list if there's interest. However, when displaying the full color graphics screen off the CD, the display slows to a crawl and it takes about 10 minutes to fully display. This machine is a Sparc 1+ w/40Megs RAM and dual slot frame buffer. Solaris 2.5.1 (Openwin) I would suppose the frame buffer is the issue. Is it possible to start Netscape in a lower bit mode so the display is faster? Or is this a Solaris display configuration issue? Or is is just a frame buffer hardware issue ? I have a Pioneer CD Changer DRM-604X which is a 6-Disk changer box and I would like to load it with shareware cdrom's and allow users to access the files via FTP. Questions: If I use ISO9660 format CD's (for PC's) , do I set the CDROM drive for 512 block size because the 4/330 and SunOS expect this block size ? If it is the 512 setting, then I would assume the drive needs to be mounted "iso9660". Is SunOS 4.1.4 able to support the changer mechanism when I access the files on different CD platters ? Is there any software that will support caching the CDROM file a user requests and spooling it out to allow the fastest "trunover" rate for other users accessing the CDROM drives ? I understand that a stack of single disk SCSI cdrom drives might be easier, but one must utilize what is at hand. The last part of the installation procedure is to take a serial number generated by the install, FAX it to Magic Software, and in return get a password. Unfortunately Magic Software seems to have gone out of business -- not responding to email, FAX or phone. So, what do I do now? Any suggestions appreciated. thanks, -f PS Further questions: I am open to opinions as to some other brand of tablet and stylus, assuming of course that I can run it on my Sparc; I have about 3 weeks to make the Wacom work or return it. Everything is working great, had no problems with SCSI setup, in fact no fuss no muss in hooking up my old PC SCSI gear to it. However the floppy drive is dead. After failing in the Prom monitor diagnostics, I noticed the DC power connector was not connected. Unfortunately, the plastic connector on the end of DC supply lead appears to be broken because it was just barely hanging onto the wire. Looking at it from the back, there's one red on the right, and 2 black in the middle, for a total of 3 wires.. is this correct? Not 4 ? And are the wires supposed to be just stuffed into a the slot the little connector, with no real locking mechanism to secure the wire? Or was my assumption correct in that the connector is busted, and I need to solder/crimp a good one on there? - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 09:38:15 +0800 From: "Erik R. First, make sure you have a bootable cdrom. Disconnect everything off the scsi bus except the cdrom, terminate it. Make sure it is jumpered (or otherwise set) for 512k blocksize, instead of the 2048k that PCs use. Then type: b sd(0,30,x) where x is 0, 1, 2.... I think 1 is the correct answer here, but I can't find it in my FEH. Note sd vice your sr. It shouldn't make a difference, but....... If this doesn't work, my first suspect is the CDROM. Make SURE is is sun compatible (RTFFAQ). Then check cabling, or try without the terminator. If this doesn't work, consult RFC2321, RITA (Reliable Internet Troubleshooting Agent) at: ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2321.txt Please note the date on the RFC, as it is new. If this works, something in the cabling or the disks themselves is wierd. Isolate and troubleshoot as before. I would also troll through the master format.dat and see if there is an entry for your disk(s). I have run into some SCSI's which the suns didn't like, notably some old IBM OEM numbers. My SS2 runs Solaris 2.5, but I think the principle is much the same for Linux. If anything, the Linux documentation will probably be better! I can't respond on the VMS side, but getting the PCs and UNIX box to cross print is a piece of cake: 1. In your smb.conf set something like ... [printers] writable = no printable = yes path = /tmp public = yes ... and samba will let Windoze users print on the UNIX printers (I have an Epson LQ2500 on a serial port and it works fine). The Windoze boxes must set up a printer on the UNIX host just as they would set up a printer on a remote Win95, NT, or WfW machine. 2. Just a little more difficult is getting the UNIX box to print on a Windoze printer. I have an old IBM laser PostScript printer attached to a WfW box. To use this from my Sun I have a file (smbprint) in the same directory as smb.conf. The printer itself is defined as a ps printer. As my system is SVR4 (and Linux isn't) listing the file is not going to be of use. However, examples for all the major UNIX variants are given with samba so you should not have too great a problem.
