To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com The 12 slot VME chassis that you have will support quite a number of different CPU boards. Since you already have a SPARC you can easily upgrade to a 4/400, or 4/600 CPU. If you have the 9U memory expansion board for the 4/300 CPU it is unique to that CPU. If you upgrade to a 4/400 you will need to corresponding memory boards. The 4/600 is the most desireable. It has S-Bus expansion slots (video, SCSI, Ethernet, Etc) and 2 CPU sockets. It can hold 2 dual SPARC CPU modules. You can run Solaris 2.4 on the 4/300 and 4/400 CPU, and Solaris 2.5.1 on the 4/600 CPU. You can also run NetBSD on them. I was re-installing 4.1.1 on my 3/60 and it turns out my OS4.1.1 tapes have had bit rot or something. I can't even get mini-root in or I would try a restore. I need a QIC24 set of OS4.1.1 tapes. I thing the OS4.1.1_U1 tape is OK. I've agreed to pick them up from him this weekend but really don't need most of it. Thought I'd mention it here to see if anyone is interested. I'll likely give some of it away and sell some for really cheap (say $20 or something). Just depends on what I pay and what it will take to package/ship the stuff. I'll post a complete list once I have it but looks like: one copy of Solaris 2.3 OS cdrom and manuals) one copy of Solaris 2.4 OS cdrom one copy of Solaris 2.5 OS cdrom one copy of Solaris 2.6 OS cdrom I think there is also some SunOS 4.1.X stuff but I'll want stome of that for my home setup. BTW, I'm looking for a reasonably priced Sun compatible CD-ROM drive. A trade would be ideal. -- Think Peace. - Alan (alanf@dorje.com) http://www.dorje.com:8080/~alanf KotBBBB (1988 GSXR1100J) RaceBike (FT500) DOD# 4210 PGP key available - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 98 23:25:13 From: "Paul Khoury - ThinkPad 701CS" Subject: Starting X To: "Suns-at-Home Email List" Just wondering, how can you start X windows? Look into www.sunhelp.com to find out more about your machine. > Also will it run solaris 2.5 ? As it is, it will not run Solaris-2.5. The last supported OS for the kernel-architecture of the Sun-4/360 (sun4) is SunOS-5.4/Solaris-2.4. You may try to find a Sun-4/600 motherboard (4600), which is basically sparcstation-10 on a VME-Motherboard. That motherboard is supported up and including to SunOS-2.5.1, but it will also run fine with 2.6 with only a bit of fiddling. The problem with 4600 motherboards is that they are probably too expensive given that you need normal MBus CPU-Modules to run them. SunOS-5.4 isn't bad, there's nearly no reason not to use it. Maybe except for Y2000 compliancy *sigh*. Lately, the monitor screen would go black by itself. I checked that I have no screensavers running or any other obscure tasks. After I let the system "relax" for a couple of days, the monitor would work again BUT for a limited time, and the same problem occurs again. Any clues ??? thank you, Fadi - ------------------------------ End of Suns-at-Home Digest ******************************
