I recently decided to add a second SCSI drive for capacity and to handle my future space needs. However, over the weekend while trying to add the drive I ran into a problem I can't seem to resolve. The drive is a Seagate ST32107WC, 2.1 gig with an SCA adapter. The drive was configured as SCSI ID 1, the original 424 meg is ID 3, the original Sun boot tape is ID 4 and an Archive Python 150/250 meg tape drive as ID 5. The 424 meg is a Seagate model, and is also set to supply TERM PWR to the bus, the new drive was tried both ways ... taking TERM PWR from the bus and supplying its own. FWIW, I also made sure the appropriate device entries existed ... sd1, sd2 and sd3 and tried SCSI ID's for the third and fourth disks also. No matter what I tried, the system never saw the drive as existing or being on the bus. Anyone have any ideas on whether I am doing something wrong, or what the problem might be? I appreciate any help anyone can send my way ... - -- +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Ramsay D. And just plop them ontop (after backing your SunOS ones up first) of the SunOS termcap and terminfo locations. I did this on 4.1.1. 4.1.1 didn't make termcap db's (termcap.db) so I don't think you need to copy/recreate that for SunOS 4.1.x. You will then be able to run almost any terminal you can think of. I did it b/c SunOS doesn't support the NetBSD/FreeBSD/BSDI ibmpc3/pc3/cons25 console type (I telnet'ted in), and believe you me... it's the most wonderful thing to have your tty's supported! As far as I know, there is no way to convert one to the other. The reason for the SX is because its not fun trying to push 24bpp across SBUS. I've got a non-SX SS10, so to get 24bpp i picked up a ZX for it. The ZX is abysmally slow compared to my older board (dual slot GX+ 4M), but it does do 24bpp. Running the card with a 24bpp root visual is too slow to be usable. Running with 8bpp, and letting apps which require truecolor visuals request them (and get them) works well enough. The vanilla SS10's do *not* have the 13w3 connector, but do have the machine-blank where you'd punch it out and stick a 13w3. At any rate, the SX runs on the MBUS (~4x the bandwidth of SBUS), which is why its usable in 24bpp mode. The VSIMM, Mbus connection, etc is just too much extra to think about if you've got a non-SX sparc 10. You're talking about punching a whole in the back of the case and doing a motherboard swap. Might as well get a new machine :) The other lame thing about the SX is that it uses one of the 8 SIMM slots, effectively limiting your ram to 448 megs. (oh shucks! :) As for OpenGL 1.1, yes, OpenGL supports the SX, but not in hardware. Unless you're running a FFB(or later), Solaris OpenGL 1.1 is a software renderer. Very dissapointing for people that bought ZX's (read: me). Sun also has no plans to ever support the ZX. TGS (www.tgs.com) makes a hardware accelerated implementation of OpenGL for the ZX and other boards (SX included) but its got a few quirks, and you have to pay for it. It is very fast on my ZX for basic geometry apps however. YMMV (im certainly not what you'd call an efficient GL programmer :) Anyone here picked up a U5 ? They're priced to be "home machines", even if you buy one from Sun. Im curious to see how they run. Anyone out there looking for 3/110 gear ? I've got a 3/110 with no disk controller, and no disks. It was also a flood victim, but i think it might still work (or work as well as it ever did). I also have a Helios 12 meg VME ram board for people using 3/140/160/180 machines. I bought it for the 3/110 and the thing doesn't work in the 110s -- *********************************************************** * Matt Evans * * University of Nebraska, Lincoln work: bmajik@ntr.net * * Computer Engineering Major school: mevans@cse.unl.edu * *********************************************************** - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 13:49:45 -0800 (PST) From: James Lockwood Subject: Suns-at-Home Digest V10 #4 To: raub@kushana.aero.ufl.edu > Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 21:20:55 -0500 (EST) > From: raub@kushana.aero.ufl.edu (Mauricio Tavares) > Subject: RAM for Sparc 1+ and 2 ? > > That is a good question. It > does get slow sometimes and I plan on finding some 4MB SIMMs. Question > for the list: I talked once with kingston and they said the 1 and the 2 > handle 16MB SIMMs. Is that true? No. Not only does Sun not support it, but the SIMM banks are aligned at 16mb boundries (so 4 4mb SIMMs in each bank is the max). IMHO 64mb is quite enough for most sun4c boxes, and there's always the SAX-based 32/64mb expansion boards for the SS2. SunOS and the *BSD family will work ok with 16mb, but going to 28mb or above gives a significant benefit if you run X. Solaris really likes 32mb or better. I run Solaris 2.6 on my wife's SS2 w/64mb and am very happy with it. I also run 2.6 on a headless SS1+ which is used as a firewall/proxy server for my home LAN, and it even handles a small newsfeed fine. -James -- James D.
