In brief. I want to install NetBSD on a new HD. I have a machine already running Solaris 2.5 and I TCPIP'd all the files on to if from my PC. I cann't use my existing /swap as a location for the miniroot because solaris complains (I think because I already have a running system.) Anyway I have a small additional HD lying around that I could use as a dd the netbsd miniroot into the new disk's b partition as stated in the installation notes. However when I try to boot I get an "Illegal Instruction" message. First up does anyone know what this means? I suspect that I've made some mistake preping the temporary drive. In MSDOS you partition the drive first (which writes the disklabel) then format each partition. The format process in effect builds the FAT file system. What do you do in solaris? The format command seems to do the complete disk with no obvious way to do a partition at a time. Do I have to run newfs on each new partition including swap? Could someone please tell me the correct order to format, partition, write disklabel and newfs this drive. At the moment I have little idea what I should be doing. To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com I would like to upgrade my Sparc2 (4/75) workstation from 32Mb to (at least) 64Mb. Before I go to the expense of tracking down Official Sun Memory for this (is this actually available now?) I would just like to confirm that I cannot put standard PC 30 pin SIMMS in there (with/without parity?) instead. Anyone done this? Also, if anyone out there has any details on the old Sparc2, could you please forward it onto me - the only info I've really managed to find is the (v. useful, admittedly) Sun Hardware FAQ by James W. Birdsall. Tanks in advance... Or is the mesg that > I get not executable a sign of a broken tape? > > I have a 3/60 with eeprom v.3.01. Tape drive is an archive. Tapes are: > SunOS 4.1 Sun/bin (Qic-24) bootable tape 1 of 1 and 2 of 2. First check the kernel sub-architecture -- a 3/60 is a "sun3" or "68020", not a "sun3x" or "68030". I don't think that's the problem here, though -- arch problems usually lead to illegal instruction faults. At the Boot: prompt, you need to respond with the controller, unit, and file number to boot from. st(0,0,0) is controller st0 (correct), unit 0 (also correct), file 0 (the boot program itself, which is why you just get the Boot: prompt again). File 1 is the non-executable index of what's on the tape, and beyond that it depends on the OS release. The correct response is something like st(0,0,2) or st(0,0,3). - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 97 12:18:07 -0500 From: "Matthew Harding" Subject: Sparc 2 motherboard - different model numbers? To: Hi, I would like to know the difference between a 501-1638 and a 501-1912 Sparc 2 motherboard. I have checked the various FAQs, and although they have different configurations of RAM, are there any fundamental differences in the motherboard? I have one of each and I wondering if spurious hardware errors could be cause by the rev level or version of the motherboards. Are they supported by different versions of the idprom, perhaps? Any information welcome! I think "b st(,,3)" should work. b st() or b st(0,0,3) The following is excerpted from Boot(8S) of a SunOS 4.1.1 manual. c = controller number, 0 if there is only one controller u = unit number, 0 if there is only one partition p = partition number (disk) or tape file number (tape) filenum Filenumber to load from tapedev to diskdev. Defaults to 3, which is hte location of the miniroot on current SunOS distribtuion tapes. > > Date: Fri, 7 Nov 1997 11:57:54 -0800 (PST) > From: Kwoody > Subject: Not Executable message... > To: SUNS-AT-HOME > > I have 3 copies of SunOS 4.1 on tape.
