Byrnes) Subject: 3/60 memory problems To: jworrell@nunic.nu.edu Well, you've gotten a good lesson in the "Sleeping Dog Theory"! :-) 3/60's are fairly sensitive when it comes to the memory, and several things can cause the machine to have the memory errors you describe. First check the jumpers and make sure that they are properly installed. Then look closely at the "fingers" on the memory sockets, a well placed dust bunny or other piece of debris laying in these fingers will cause memory errors. Next, check the seating of the original memory modules. (Using proper static protection of course!) Lightly wiggle each module and make sure each is pressed properly in place. If this doesn't work, pull each module and check the fingers as described above. If all that doesn't work, it is possible that one of the memory modules went bad during the process of installing the additional ones. The easiest way I have found to narrow it down is by pulling all the memory and installing only 4 megs at a time, make sure to set the jumpers properly. I know on fellow who used to just change the memory jumpers to narrow down the bank causing the problem, but a bad chip can cause problems if plugged into the bus, even if jumpered out. Oh, yes, don't worry about the prom settings for the memory size, just set them for 24 (actually 18 hex) and leave it. Having worked on hundreds of 3/60's I've never seen a problem caused by the prom value set above the memory size. Its a bit time consuming, but if you had lots of money to buy test equipment, you'd have an Ultra-Sparc and a service contract, :-) Good Luck, Arthur J. According to the Sun harware FAQ, this would be version 4.11u1 or earlier. If anyone has a copy or copies that they would be willing to part with, please let me know what version and what the price would be. Thanks, Kenneth L.
