He was using it to to DNS and mail, and replaced it with a PC running BSDi. I saw the machine running, so I know that my problem is my own, not an existing problem. The machine had 16MB in it, but my friend (Jody) gave me another 8MB to put in for a total of 24MB. The system was filthy, but the only cleanup I had to do on the pizza box was to clean the cover. I only touched the main board to put the SIMMs in. We did use an air gun to blow out the dust at Jody's house, but in all cases we used static precautions. When I power on the beast, I get memory errors of the following type: MEMORY ERROR! Status D4, DVMA-BIT 0, Context 0, Vaddr: 104, Paddr: 00000104, Type 0 at 00000000 MEMORY ERROR! Status D4, DVMA-BIT 0, Context 0, Vaddr: 104, Paddr: 00000104, Type 0 at 00000000 Memory Error at 0x104: Exp=0x972C5A5A, Obs=0x970C5A5A, Xor=0x200000! The memory address of the failure does change, but the Xor value never deviates from 0x200000. If I use the x command at the PROM prompt and go to the memory tests, the machine passes the read/write/compare and address test, but fails the scan test. I tried a variety of things to change the conditions. I took out the old memory. I re-jumpered the mainboard to only see 16 and 20MB. I changed the PROM value for memory testing. Nothing changes. If you keep the monitor off when you're not using it (a good idea for both power consumption and fire hazard reduction), then with a disk or two it probably consumes 200 watts or so on average, somewhat more if you have a color monitor instead of mono. You're unlikely to notice the difference on your power bills unless you look very closely. --James James W. I started out in Sun's with a 3/60 running next to my bed! According to the specs in James Birdsall's Sun Hardware Reference (ftp://ftp.picarefy.com/pub/Sun-Hardware-Ref), a 3/60 board uses about 12 amps on the +5v rail, about half an amp on the -5v rail, and about the same on the +12v rail. This would alter depending on what sort of framebuffer is plugged into the P4-bus connector. If you have the option, try to go for a 3/80 instead of a 3/60. That way you have a smaller, more compact machine, and it's easier to upgrade to a Sparc machine (by swapping the motherboard and upgrading the OS on your disk). Also, the 3/80's have room for internal 3/5" SCSI drives. Only problem is that the 3/60 and 3/80 version of SunOS have different kernels, but everything else is the same. There are versions of NetBSD for both types of machine too. If you ever want to upgrade to a very high performance machine, with a 3/80 you can even fit a Cycle Computer SparcStation 5 clone motherboard since they make a type that fits the 3/80 case (same case as the Sparcstation 1 and 1+ use). However, 3/60's are great. You can stand on top of them, and sit all manner of heavy monitors (like big 19" Hitachi colour beasties) on top of them, and you can speed them up a little too. Take a look at my 3/60 speedup page at 'http://lios.apana.org.au/~cdewick/data/3_60_speedup.html'. As long as you keep the power supply, fan and metal grilles clean and the airflow unimpeded a 3/60 will run very reliably. You can't do any of this with a 3/80 though I have been looking at ways to speed 3/80's up so we can drop 33 MHz CPU/co-pro sets in place of the existing 20 MHz ones. Regards, Craig. -- Craig Dewick. I've got a Sun 3/160 packed into a 3/140 case. I have a CPU w/16mb ram, network, scsi, and framebuffer for an ECL monitor; a keyboard, and a mouse. That's it. I'd like to get it running, but I need a monitor, hard drive, etc. Also, this thing boots fine the first time, and after that it boots w/ parity errors and must be left off for about 20 minutes for it to boot normally again. This is my first experience with a sun or any sort of equipment that was high-end sometime in its lifetime. I paid $100 for this thing last December. Is it worth putting more (anything?) into this or am I just sort of sunk? Are people throwing away better stuff? Please tell me what the best thing to do would be. I can spend up to $200 more if its worth it... Please Help! Oh yeah, and if you have any good suggestions for me you could contact me rather than just calling since I get this list in digest mode (is there even a non-digest mode?) I'm interested in using an sc (Sun SCSI 2) as sc0 to assist the existing si (Sun SCSI 3) as si0. In particular I'd like to install sc0 in slot 7 to take advantage of the pass-through internal connector and si0 in slot 8 to drive the old internal SCSI-I devices. In my first experiment I configured the sc0 at 0x20400 but had no luck getting the PROM to recognize si0 in slot 8 (and of course I set the backplane jumpers appropriately). Swapping them around with sc0 in slot 8, and si0 in slot 7 (i.e. where it was before the sc0 experimetn), but with nothing connected to sc0's bus booted fine but a kernel configured as follows failed to notice sc0: controller sc0 at vme24d16 ? csr 0x204000 priority 2 vector scintr 0x41 tape st3 at sc0 drive 040 flags 1 tape st4 at sc0 drive 050 flags 1 tape st5 at sc0 drive 030 flags 1 tape st6 at sc0 drive 020 flags 1 disk sr1 at sc0 drive 060 flags 2 disk sd6 at sc0 drive 000 flags 0 disk sd7 at sc0 drive 001 flags 0 disk sd8 at sc0 drive 010 flags 0 disk sd9 at sc0 drive 011 flags 0 controller si0 at vme24d16 ? csr 0x200000 priority 2 vector siintr 0x40 tape st0 at si0 drive 040 flags 1 tape st1 at si0 drive 050 flags 1 tape st2 at si0 drive 030 flags 1 disk sr0 at si0 drive 060 flags 2 disk sd0 at si0 drive 000 flags 0 disk sd2 at si0 drive 010 flags 0 disk sd4 at si0 drive 020 flags 0 Dmesg from this boot looks exactly like a boot without sc0 installed: SunOS Release 4.1.1_U1 (MOST) #7: Sat May 10 17:12:40 EDT 1997 Copyright (c) 1983-1991, Sun Microsystems, Inc. mem = 131072K (0x8000000) avail mem = 131899392 Ethernet address = 8:0:20:0:45:dd si0 at vme24d16 0x200000 vec 0x40 st0 at si0 slave 32 # MT-02 w/ 60MB QIC st1 at si0 slave 40 # QIC-150 SCSI st2 at si0 slave 24 # QIC-525 SCSI sr0 at si0 slave 48 # Sun compat CD-ROM sd0 at si0 slave 0 sd0: sd2 at si0 slave 8 sd2: sd4 at si0 slave 16 sd4: zs0 at obio 0x20000 pri 3 zs1 at obio 0x0 pri 3 ie0 at obio 0xc0000 pri 3 bwtwo0 at obmem 0xff000000 pri 4 bwtwo0: resolution 1152 x 900 root on sd0a fstype 4.2 swap on sd0b fstype spec size 69720K dump on sd0b fstype spec size 69696K Console is on ttya, and that's it -- it's just a big old server! ;-) The only verified clue I have that I think is important is that with si0 in slot 8, and only external disks connected, the scsi bus failed to reset on power up. The sc0 in slot 7 did appear to be recognized and I was able to 'b st(1,0.0)' and get the 60MB QIC to spin, so it seemed to be OK there. I'm fairly certain the PROM in this machine is 3.0, BTW. -- Greg A. To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com Hi all, I recently got some old Sun 3/60 and I made them work again (check out http://sirius.ccii.unipi.it). I installed NetBSD/sun3 1.2 and it works very well except that it (randomly?) crash about from one to three times a day just displaying the following errors on the console (errors go on ad infinitum until I stop the machine with L1-A): si_intr: spurious from sbc isr_autovec: ipl 2 not claimed I had a look at the kernel code and I've seen that those messages are relative to the scsi controller. However I swapped three different sun 3/60 motherboards and I get always the same error, the scsi devices however are always the same. It can't be a motherboard problem, so it must be a kernel problem or a disk/tape/cable problem. Can anyone give me a hint? I would also appreciate if anyone could address me to a good NetBSD/sun3 hardware guru. Thanks in advance.
