To: suns-at-home@tigger.net-kitchen.com Hello, We currently have a Sun running SUNOS 5+ under Solaris 2.5.1. We have an unlimited user license but currently are restricted to 50 users maximum who can telnet in. Anybody past the 50 currently logged in are kicked off before they can get a login prompt. My question is, how do we cleanly increase the number of users that are allowed to log in. I know I somehow have to do the following: a) increase the number of pty's from 50 to 150+ by manual or some sysadmin tool. What would be the commands or the tools name? b). probably would have to reboot the machine for the changes to take affect. Yes/No? Is there a way, besides changing telnets port #, to allow only certain network address's to receive a login prompt when telnetting in? I don't want to use a firewall, but am curious to know if telnet has the capability, similar to ftp, to prevent or allow specified network address's upon connection to receive a login prompt. If you don't receive a login prompt, then you can't guess at the login/passwds. Any answers are appreciated. Turn off the computer and unplug the monitor cable. Turn on the computer and wait about 60 seconds until the system has completed self test, then plug the monitor cable in again. If this works, you have a multisync monitor on a down rev board. The board needs some changes to make it work with the monitor. I have the info if you need it. -- Gary W. Subject: SUN (Sony)GDM17E10 Monitor Not Compatible? To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com To All, I recently had some problems with a CG6 card, as I was testing the card and it's replacement in several systems, I noticed an odd problem with my new GDM17E10 monitor. On the new CG6 card in a Sparc1+ it will only show a flashing green pattern when the system boots. Not even tty output. An older Sun monitor works properly. I also tried the GDM17E10 on a 4/330 and although the tty output was OK during bootup, the system returned errors and would not allow me to start openwindows. Once again, the older Sun monitor worked fine here also. The odd thing was, if I booted and then started openwindows with the old monitor, I could then attach the newer GDM17E10 monitor and then everything works fine. Am I missing something here? Has anyone had a similar problem ? Thanks, -Steve - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Mar 1997 00:53:52 -0500 From: earl@baugh.org (Earl Baugh) Subject: Sun Monitor on PC.... To: suns-at-home@tigger.net-kitchen.com Hello all. Recently I got ahold of an old Sun Monitor (part 365-1063-01, a Sony GDM 1604A15...). Since I already have a 21' Sun Sony on my SS10, I figured this would be a good monitor for the Pentium system I have running Solaris 2.5.1, x86. However, I can't seem to figure out exactly what I'll have to do to get it to work. Here's what I've tried so far: According to James Birdsall's Sun Hardware Reference (a wonderful resource), I learned some information about the monitor. While the exact part numbers listed above don't DIRECTLY map to the 365-1063 model he has listed, I'm going on the idea that the specifications are still correct. So, it's got a 66hz vertical refresh rate and a 61.8 Khz horizontal sync rate, and operates at a 1152 x 900 resolution. It wasn't clear in the docs for the VGA cards I have whether or not these frequencies would be supported...though I was hoping simply a cable would do. (Since the other path is a more expensive one...) I did some digging for cables, I first found some 13w3 to HD15 (Sun to VGA cable) adapters in the Access Development Corp catalog. I called them, and they didn't have my model listed, so they basically said that the adapters they have wouldn't work. I then found in the Workstation EXPRESS catalog two 13w3 to HD15 adapters. However, when speaking with Workstation EXPRESS, they weren't able to tell me whether or not they'd work with this model monitor. However, they said "try them out" and if they didn't work, then send them back. Well, I ordered them, received them, and the initial check is that they don't seem to work, i.e. I don't get a "clear" picture, it's a rolling picture, which, is obviously a problem. I tried the monitor with 4 VERY different VGA cards, so it seems that I've got a sync problem, which seems to jive with the FAQ I read on Software Integrators page, (see below), not simply a VGA card that didn't span the correct refresh rates (or I've got 4 VERY different but lacking, VGA cards 8-) ) So, it was then time to look for folks that sell PC cards explicitly to drive Sun (or Sony) monitors. I found two companies in past Suns-At-Home postings (Mirage, http://www.mirage-mmc.com/core.html and Software Integrators, http://www.si87.com) that say they make video cards for PC's that are explicitly sold to drive Sun "fixed-frequency" monitors. Software Integrators cards are $295...ouch. I'm waiting to hear back from Mirage...but since I had to fill out a form to get the info, I'm not all that hopeful that it'll be a lot cheaper than Software Integrators. In any case, before I drop this kinda money, I would like to know that I'm not headed down yet another deadend street. (or if I overlooked any other "cheaper" solution...) So, I'm wondering if A) Anybody else on the list has used a Sun monitor in connected to a VGA card. If so, what "magic" did it take? B) If anybody has used either of these two cards... Opinion on them? You like? Don't like? What OS? Win 95? Solaris x86? If push comes to shove, I can use this monitor on one of my Win 95 machines, but that's really a fall back position, as it would be much more useful on the Solaris X86 machine. Thanks! Earl D. I have now managed to try booting over network from a Solaris 2.5 host where I had read in the tapes. I tried both the normal vmunix kernel and the lightweight vmunix_small kernel, but the result was the same as with the MUNIX kernel and the log seemed to show more or less exactly same messages. The kernel bails out right after this line zs0 at obio 0x62002000 pri 3 every time. I wonder what normally would happen next? Perhaps it would give a zs1 banner since there is a B port too? Will the new Solaris just over write the > exisitng operating system or should I start with a fresh formatted disk ? You don't say what you are upgrading from and I'm not sure what exactly you mean by Upgrade. In the Solaris 2 install, Upgrade means specifically that you already have an older version of Solaris 2 and you want to bring it up to the new OS level without changing most configurations you've customized. From the context it sounds like you want to overwrite the old OS and start from scratch with a fresh install. (Solaris 2 doesn't have an upgrade option for upgrading from SunOS due to the great differences between them.) If this is the case, it doesn't matter whether it is a new disk or one that already has stuff on it. The Solaris install doesn't care. If you select a fresh install, it will overwrite whatever is there. (Unless you preserve existing partitions.) > If I start from scratch with a brand new disk, will the Solaris CD take care > of all the low level fdisk/formatting procdures also ? Or is there a utility > that needs to be copied from my existing disk running SunOS ? Solaris 2 has an install GUI that is pretty easy to use. You don't need to do anything beforehand. You can let it partition for you, or you can help it out. I would suggest the latter as the default partitions tend to be too small and you may have trouble adding patches later or upgrading to the next release. All new disks shipped in the last several years have already been low level formatted, and don't need to this to be done again by the user. In fact, some SCSI disks just ignore the format command and return successful immediately. -- James Lick -- jlick@drivel.com -- http://drivel.com/jlick/ -- - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Mar 1997 17:18:55 -0800 (PST) From: James Lick Subject: Upgrading external disk To: Dwight McKay > Last summer I replaced the 207MB drive in my IPC with a Quantum 1.2G, and > it works great. Look at the box from the side, and on the top row of decorative holes, count to the third one from the back, then stick a small screwdriver, pin, etc. into the hole immediately below it which will release a clip inside. Pull up slightly and then do the same thing on the other side and then pull up and forward on the case. Inside, the drive will be mounted on a metal sled. To release it, locate the large tab on the bottom of the case and release it by prying gently outward with a screwdriver, and slide the sled forward. The rest is conventional screws and putting it back together should be self explanatory. -- James Lick -- jlick@drivel.com -- http://drivel.com/jlick/ -- [Several of you described how to get this case open. The current drive works fine, but is rather small. With vendors practically giving away disk drives I've been thinking of switching it for a 1-2 Gig drive. These questions are coming from a hardware idiot so bare with me. :-} Can I buy just any internal SCSI drive that has the right connector? SunExpress wants $650-985 for their replacement drives!?
