I recently acquired an IPC 4/50 and I too am considering installing Solaris on it. One nice thing about BSDi is that it more or less works right out of the box on the Intel platform, whereas configuring Solaris has been a real strain. Have you actually tried the BSDi SPARC version? Are you able to offer any comparisons? Hagen Finley - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 01:58:10 -0800 From: "Steve B." Subject: CG6 Frame Buffer Kaput!! To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com To All, I've just received in a Sparc 1+ with a dual slot CG6 frame buffer that looks like it has bitten the dust. On bootup it just displays a green alternating pattern on the screen of the monitor. The monitor works fine on another systems. Has anyone had any luck repairing these, or know of a repair place that can handle this cheap enough to make it worth it ? Or am I hosed on this?? Oh, and the Sparc 1+ boots fine and displays properly with another CG6 card. Thanks, -Steve - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 19:39:43 -0800 (PST) From: James Lick Subject: New Sparc 5 and 20 case To: Dwight McKay > [ Can anyone describe how to tell the two case styles apart? --ddm ] The older case has equal height drive bays for the CD-ROM and floppy drives, about 1/3 height. The new case has a standard 1/2 height CD-ROM bay and a much smaller height floppy drive bay. This has the advantage of supporting standard sized CD-ROM drives, but requires a slim style floppy drive. The name of the new case is the Aurora 2 and this is printed on a label inside the case below where the floppy goes. I believe all new systems going out are in the new style case now. -- James Lick -- jlick@drivel.com -- http://drivel.com/jlick/ -- - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 19:34:22 -0800 (PST) From: James Lick Subject: Solaris 2.6 on 4/600 To: Dwight McKay >> Looking ahead, all remaining VME support >> is being dropped in 2.6 which means the 4/600 is no longer supported in >> that release. > > The impression I got was that it was just the SM100 CPUs that were no > longer supported in 2.6. Nope, 2.6 will not work on any 4/600 system in "Beta Update" and the released version. Earlier versions of 2.6 still booted but it was not "supported". Now it doesn't work at all. The SM100 cpu support was taken out earlier in the 2.6 development cycle, but dropping support for the 4/600 altogether was announced a while back as well. The 4/600 is still a nice system unfortunately. -- James Lick -- jlick@drivel.com -- http://drivel.com/jlick/ -- - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 11:47:32 +0100 (MET) From: lukas@design.de (Lukas Wunner) Subject: Suns-at-Home Digest V10 #8 To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com Hi, > Upon start it passes all the selftests cleanly, > then says "ID PROM invalid." That may be caused by the battery being empty; the machine has forgotten its ID. There's a FAQ for that out there, look for it at: ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/he/henderso/sun-nvram-hostid.faq.html > and then it stops with the boot program prompt: > Boot: May be caused by invalid NVRAM contents as well, or by the tape being broken. I'd check the NVRAM first and then see if it continues with the boot process. If it doesn't, I'd try to think of other solutions. (try to get used SunOS tapes somewhere etc) Hope that helps, Lukas. - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 01:58:12 -0800 From: "Steve B." Subject: Suns-at-Home Digest V10 #8 To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com To all, I am planning on ugrading some Sparc 1+ machines to run on Solaris 2.5.1 . They are equipped with 40 megs memory so I believe they should work. My question is that I have not upgraded a system before, do I just boot from the CDROM and take it from there ? Will the new Solaris just over write the exisitng operating system or should I start with a fresh formatted disk ? If I start from scratch with a brand new disk, will the Solaris CD take care of all the low level fdisk/formatting procdures also ? Or is there a utility that needs to be copied from my existing disk running SunOS ? Thanks for any input, as you can see, Sun equipment is going to be a new experience for me!! To: suns-at-home@tigger.net-kitchen.com Thanks to several very kind and most helpful people I have managed to patch the brand new NVRAM to a valid status. The machine now manages to read in the MUNIX kernel from tape but when it starts to execute it bails out more or less straight away. Hoping that someone might have seen this behavoir and might have a clue as to what is wrong, I enclose the console log below. Apart from the external QIC-150 tape and its SCSI bus terminator, there is a internal 105 MB Quantum on target 3 and I have tried with its termination resistors both in and out. Could the boot tape be faulty, perhaps? Now my Sun external (lunchbox) 434M drive is about to go, and I'm wondering if it's possible to do a similar upgrade for it. I fooled around with it a bit, but I couldn't get the case open easily. Has anybody got experience upgrading a "desktop storage unit"?
