When I try to boot it in debug mode, I get the below output. I suspected based on extensive experience with sun3 CPUs that it might have used up the NVRAM battery, but for the life of me I can't *FIND* the sucker on this machine. Anyone have any ideas? At this point i cannot locate any toshiba 3301,3401,4101 or any hitachi 1750s. To: Suns-at-Home@tigger.net-kitchen.com Hi, everyone ! Merry X'mas and Happy New Year ! I have 2 questions to ask : 1) My sun20 workstation always lost its "lpsched" process, so I can't use print service. when I start the process, it will be killed soon. What can I do ? I don't want to re-install the system.( My OS is SunOS 5.5 i.e. Solaris 2.5) 2) Also in the Solaris 2.5 system, how can I get user login accounting report from /usr/adm/wtmp ? I don't want pacct for process accounting ( I think it's time consuming and using too much disk space) My workstation is not at_home but in the office :-(, where can I get answers of above question , or does anyone know such a "suns_in_office" mailing list like "suns_at_home" ? Thank you. - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jan 1997 20:10:34 -0800 From: misawa@dogbert.lbl.gov (Shigeki Misawa) Subject: Query : How to choose and connect to an ISP ? To: suns-at-home@tigger-1.net-kitchen.com Hello. Clueless Newbie question here. 1) Does anyone have any advice on how to choose an ISP ? A cursory look at the nationwide ISP's (AOL, ATT, NETCOM) seems to suggest that they are geared towards providing access to Wintel and Macintosh machines (clients ?) 2) What's involved in connecting a SPARCstation running Solaris 2.5 to an ISP ? I gather that I will need a modem and set up PPP but is there more ? (e.g. how is mail handled if at all, what about ip-numbers and name resolution ?) 3) Also, do any of the ISP's have tech support that can handle Unix "clients" ? Any info would be appreciated. If not how can I get a used copy of the Solaris v2.?.? and a manual for the v2 I have installed. I can't figure out how to do a tape back up under SunOS v1.. I have a very good book for v2.0 which shows me enough to really get going. How can I get Fast EtherNet going on my Sparc 1?? I don't recall where I got my copy from, but a net search should tell you about it. Possibly a reference to this should be included in every copy of the Suns-At-Home digest, since it's so useful, and answers so many questions that might otherwise be asked here. [See the next message or follow the link to James Birdsall's hardware ] [reference from the SaH pages, http://www.net-kitchen.com/~sah. --ddm ] The Sparc 1 is a slowish machine, comparable to a 486/33. It has three sbus slots, and 16 SIMM slots, as well as space in the chassis for two 3.5" hard drives. The SIMM slots can take 1MBx9 or 4MBx9 SIMMs, giving you a capacity of up to 64MB of RAM. They have to be filled in a certain order; see the SHR for details. You can put in a second (SCSI) hard drive fairly easily, so long as you already have the mounting kit. If you don't, you'll have to get yourself a SCSI cable and power cable (easy to find) and just not move the machine too much. :-) (I'm looking for a mounting kit myself, if anyone knows where to get one.) There's an external SCSI port (high-density 50-pin) on the back that you can plug a tape backup into. cjs Curt Sampson cjs@portal.ca Info at http://www.portal.ca/ Internet Portal Services, Inc. Will some one please tell me > something about this system???? Hi Howard, The SparcStation 1 was Sun's first true desktop Sparc-based machine. It appeared in 1989 (?) and was the Sparc replacement for the 68020-based 3/60's. It's rated at 12.5 SunMIPS, which is not fast by current standards, but compared to a 3/60, which pulled a whopping 3.5 SunMIPS, it's not a bad machine. It uses Sbus for i/o expansion, which is still very much a supported bus type by both Sun and third-party card designers. The machine can support both 1 meg and 4 meg SIMM's of the 30-pin, 9-bit type. There's sockets for 4 banks of 4 SIMM's, so in theory you can have up to 64 meg of RAM. The case has room inside for two 3.5" SCSI hard drives, and for a 3.5" 1.44 meg floppy drive. The best source of information on Sun hardware is James Birdsall's Sun Hardware Reference, which is available for FTP from ftp.picarefy.com in '/pub/Sun-Hardware-Ref'. James is slowly converting the information into HTML for eventual conversion of the entire Reference into a web-searchable database. Regards, Craig. -- Craig Dewick. I still have my original Sparcstation 1. It has needed a couple of small repairs, but until it dies I don't see the need to get anything newer. > Things like the technical specs, You mean like 20 MHz, etc, etc.? > expanding the memory to more than 16 MEG. Inside you see the SIMM slots. Each group of four slots can take four 1Mbx9 or four 4Mbx9 SIMMs with a speed of 100ns or better. Actually I don't know if you can find new SIMMs that *slow* any more, but faster is fine. If you mix sizes, make sure the first bank gets the larger SIMMs! (But I forget which bank is "first." Probably the one with the lowest numbers printed on the board. I have four 4MBx9 70ns and four 1MBx9 100ns. No problem. > installing a larger hard disk The power supply on the sparc-1 is minimal and Sun does not recommend any internal disks larger than the Quantum 105MB drives they shipped. Externally, you can connect pretty much any single-ended (i.e., not differential) narrow (50 pin) SCSI device you care to name. > and how to do a tape backup of the hard disk, That's standard unix stuff, not specific to sparc-1 or sun. The previous owner of the SPARC 1 system had the system networked to a MAC, so the SPARC 1 boots up looking for Apple talk expecting to talk to a MAC. I've been running NetBSD, but I'd really like to have SunOS (I have NetBSD/FreeBSD on my PC's, and the Sun 3 is a hobby machine). I'm trying to load it from an Archive Scorpion drive, and by booting st(0,0,0) I get another Boot: prompt. My experience is with SunOS 4.1.x and higher... I had believed the tpboot is supposed to load munix automagically, but I guess that's not the case in here. I've tried various things to no avail. The Boot: loader dies whenever I enter a valid device (like st(0,0,0) or sd(0,0,0) or the aforementioned and a file). It DOES list the xy and mt controllers as valid, while the PROM (v3.0.1) does not. I get Bus Timeout errors whenever I try to boot from teh Boot: program (apparently a tpboot type of thing?). Is there any way to "override" this old tpboot program, or get it to function properly? I do have SunOS 3.4 upgrade tapes I'd like to install too.
