I was able to build a system from distribution tapes, and am able to use dump and tar with the drive. However, I have been having problems interchanging tapes with a Sun-3 system. When I take a tape written on the Sun-2 to a Sun-3, I can read the files at the beginning of the tape. However, it reaches a certain point on the tape and dies with an IO error. I believe that it may be near the end of the tape where it would switch tracks. When I write a tape on the Sun-3 and carry it to the Sun-2, it reads a lot of files off the tape, but dies at about the same point on the tape (usually hanging the system). How compatible is the 3020 Archive drive with the newer 9045 drives? I thought that the only difference would be that I wouldn't be able to use the higher density QIC-24 format. I picked up the 3020 used so it could be out of alignment or need adjusting. If so, does anyone have suggestions on how to adjust it? PS. If it makes any difference, I've ordered and plan to start using the Sysgen 4000 controller (assuming it will work with the 3020 drive). --- David P.
