Message-ID: Hello guys: Can I install am27h010 eprom into SPARCstation20? I am going to use OpenBoot 2.25r download from http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/sun-bootroms/ I found the firmware is not large, so I think I can put it into am27h010. The am27h010 is pulled from a SPARCstation 1000 system board. The orignal eprom used by SPARCstation is a 27c240-20. thanks for your help From chl@clerew.man.ac.uk Fri Mar 14 22:49:00 2008 From: chl@clerew.man.ac.uk (Charles Lindsey) Date: Fri, 14 Mar 2008 22:49:00 -0000 Subject: [Suns-at-Home] Floppy experiment requested Message-ID: I suspect I have found a bug in the floppy disc driver (fd.c, which can be viewed on www.opensolaris.org). However, it is possible that there is a hardware problem on my machine, so I am requesting people on this list to see if they can reproduce it. I am using Solaris 10-u1 on an Ultra-2, but I would expect the same problem might exist on other platforms and on earlier OSes, since I doubt the fd driver has changed signficiantly in years. Here is how to reproduce it. 1. Ensure that power management is on ("autopm enable" in /etc/power.conf) with a sensible timout, e.g. "system-threshold 900s" (or "15m"). 2. Ensure that /vol/dev/*diskette* are emtpy. If not, 'eject fd' and wait 15 minutes for pm to timeout. Volmgt should be running, of course. 3. Ensure that there is NO floppy in the drive, and that there has been no floppy activity for 15 minutes. 4. If you have Solaris 10, run (as root) 'dtrace -F -m fd' so that you can ensure that fd_pm_raise_power gets called during the next step. 5. Do 'volcheck -v /dev/diskette0'. If it reports "/dev/diskette0 has media", then you have seen the bug, It should, of course, have said "/dev/diskette0 has no media" and if, after seeing the bug, you do another eject and another volcheck (whilst the power is still up, of course), it will then get it right. The cause of the problem is that, to see whether there is a disc present, you need to see the DSKCHG signal from the floppy drive, and to see that signal the drive has to be selected. But it seems that fd.c deselects the drive at the end of restoring the power and so fails to observe that signal. Plenty of cheap E450 parts on ebay means that theres no limit to what can be replaced.. I couldnt resist it - full of drives :-) All Power is green, the key mechanism works. OBP loads, I can see the hostid and Sun banner, It displays memory (it seems to think 2GB now) it gets as far as the initialising | which doesnt turn and it just hangs there forever. I tried the diagnostic boot, same thing. I tried breaking into NVRAM and can get to an OK prompt and lots of drives show up :-) but from there on Im not sure. I am planning to take all the memory out and boards and drives out and slowly rebuild it checking if it boots each time. That way I can isolate the defect. I suspewct there may be some funky settings in place from the previous owner, and this would help get the machine back. Have you tried to boot a Solaris CD-ROM? That would eliminate any odd partitoning that may have been savaged by the previous owner (before dumping the box for 11 quid ;^) Were this machine in front of me, I would have taken the following steps (briefly): 1) Visually inspect the hardware for obvious problems, and if none, power it up as-is. Note results. 2) Crack out canned air and clean all the dust bunnies out, esp. around chassis and PS fans and boot again, note results. 3) Absent a successful boot, I would then boot with "stop-n" and reset NVRAM/OBP settings to their defaults and note results. 4) If I were still absent a successful boot, I'd reseat the RAM, the CPU (make sure it is in the proper slot for single CPU operation) and remove all HDs and boot again, noting results. 5) Were I finally successful, I would install one HD, install a minimal Solaris installation and the VTS software to exercise the hardware and let it run for a day or so, noting results. If that were successful, I'd feed in additional disks and buld up the system. >I am planning to take all the memory out and boards and drives out and >slowly rebuild it checking if it boots each time. If you get the non-spinning "|" character, the error might be in the software image on the HDs themselves. >Im sad to say I dont know a lot about this class of machine, being an >Ultra 10 sort of person. The methodology is the same, trust your instincts and use the force ;^) If the above doesn't help, drop another note to the list and we'll see if we can't sort it out for you. We never got to upgrading those machines while I was there, so I don't know. But as I recall, the workaround is to turn off autoboot, power on, give all the drives plenty of time to spin up, make sure all the green lights are on and then boot. Basically, the OS goes looking for disks faster than they are available to it. Also, E450's are particularly picky about being properly grounded and having a fairly stable environment. We had a problem with machine room humiddity control that led to major biannual shifts in humiity - there was about a 50% chance that any given E450 would crash in the week or two following the shift. HVAC finally got on top of the humidity issue and boom - stable E450's. It turns out I think to be a system board issue. I have SIMM Failures in each bank, and switching round the SIMMS makes no difference. I also have two processors, both with DC converters, but only one 'processor 3' (helpfully neither processor is labeled as such) boots. My thoughts are I need a motherboard. I dont have any evidence that theres necessarily anything wrong with the memory, disks, processors, pci cards etc. It counted lots of memory first time I booted it, now It wont get past the diagnostics. Anyone agree with me its time to find a better main board? thanks for all the positive emails. Lucent had a huge telecomms software center in Columbus. Many 5ESS fault management and provisioning applications were written there, mostly all running on HP-UX. There is still some R&D there but the coding and testing has all gone to China and India and the remaining apps are being ported to Solaris and Linux. Even the smallest RP3440 (in a former Compaq chassis) is a hard sell when the equivilent Sun box is a quarter of the price. No, the V880 does nothing for my carbon footprint. However, since I got it, I have powered down 2 hungry HP PA-RISC boxes, 2 small SGI boxes and 2 Sun Ultra 5s. Soon a 3rd U5 will be powered down. Everything that those machines did is now being performed by the V880 running Solaris 10 with about 6 zones. On the green aspect, I suspect that on the whole my total power consumption has gone down slightly. Further advantages are easier administration, improved throughput and a huge simplification in the cabling of my "data centre" (actually the back end of the garage). The fact that I have the ethernet RSC port configured as the console means I never need to bring my laptop (or myself) to the garage - a blessing in the winter or when the car is in there. Total CPU utilisation has increased, but I still have plenty of reserves. So what is left powered on? From ADSL modem to a small hub, to a pair of old Dell boxes (600MHz Celeron) that act as an OpenBSD firewall cluster, to the main switch connecting the V880, the U5 still running for a while, a monitoring PC (Debian GNU/Linux), my desktop PC (also Debian, with W2K running under VMWare) and a wi-fi thingy that talks to my laptop. That's my current network. I got the V880 of ebay at a very good price (£1,200 for 4 X 750MHz UltraSPARC III + 16GB memory + 12 32GB disks). In a brief moment of madness I considered a fully stocked E10K instead (only another £200), but then sanity returned when realised that I could not afford to run it. Now that would really have blown any green credential I might lay claim to :-) Cody Swanson wrote: > We recently decommissioned a perfectly working 32 way SGI Origin 2000 > machine with 32gb ram because the power/cooling wasn't worth it when > compared to a new cluster of quad core linux machines that consume a > similar amount of power but do many times the workload. > > Julie Baumler wrote: >> >> >> On Tue, 18 Mar 2008, Cody Swanson wrote: >> >>> I can't imaging the V880 is power efficient. HVAC finally got on top of the humidity issue and boom - stable > E450's. The other thing that kills them is blocked airflow through the front of the fan tray. My E450 (2 x 400 MHz CPU, 2 GB RAM, half-full of disks) keeled over today with CPU overheating and I tracked it down to the perforated metal panel behind the square-holed plastic fascia being completely blocked by a layer of dust. I vacuumed all that off and the machine's a happy camper again. I don't have a machine room or any climate control other than opening the window on the room - it's a spare room in my house. 8-) I have a couple of E250's here now and one has rack-mount rails so I'm thinking of reconfiguring my 19" rack to put one of the E250's in that, and use it to replace the E450 that's sitting on castors on the floor. It's a non-carpeted floor which helps a lot for cleaning, but it would be nice to have a bit of climate control. A/C is expensive to run esp. when it's just for one room. Reminds me of a quote I read in a book about computer graphics :- "A Cray is a real headache. This one had a $12,000 a month electric bill, and the maintenance and support bill for the "Crayons," the people who attended to it and kept it working, came to like $50,000 a month. It's like a 747 jetliner, if it's not in the air with seats full you're loosing money" David Sleg - Digital Productions (who did the CG scenes for "The Last Starfighter") Best regards Ben From Bob.Hoekstra@HoekstraSystems.ltd.uk Fri Mar 21 20:36:40 2008 From: Bob.Hoekstra@HoekstraSystems.ltd.uk (Bob Hoekstra) Date: Fri, 21 Mar 2008 20:36:40 +0000 Subject: [Suns-at-Home] Power usage was Sparcs for pickup in Columbus OH In-Reply-To: References: <94333A1BF0D2684081652E54E0DE9E98013DECAE@DEEXC1U01.de.lucent.com> <47E05A3C.3020704@HoekstraSystems.ltd.uk> <47E0837E.2020603@sysop.ca> <47E17C4A.4090104@sysop.ca> <47E1A60A.7010909@HoekstraSystems.ltd.uk> Message-ID: <47E41C58.4080104@HoekstraSystems.ltd.uk> Ben Lewis wrote: > > Everything that those machines did is now being performed by the > V880 running Solaris 10 with about 6 zones. > > Reminds me of a quote I read in a book about computer graphics :- > > "A Cray is a real headache.
