" I just bought a Yamaha CRW 6416S CD burner on Ebay, for use on my
Ultra-2.
"
" There are jumpers on the back for fixing the SCSI unit number (easy),
plus
" two marked 'Parity' and 'Block' (also 'Terminate', which I presume should
" be out).
"
" So should those two be In or Out? Judging by my previous CD-ROM, I
thought
" In for both, because that previous one had jumpers 'Parity' and
" 'Sector-Size', both of which needed to be in. But it worketh not so far,
" and it is too late at night to try all the permutations just now .
"
" The Yamaha was manufactured in 1999, and I assume that in those days you
" had to jumper them for the Sun 512-block nonsense (or doesn't Solaris 10
" care about that anymore?).
solaris has never cared about it. openboot 3 on ultrasparcs doesn't
either. in both cases they just issue the proper mode command to
switch blocksize.
Provided, of course, that the disc understands that mode command, which I
gather some of the early ones didn't.
However, it seems in this case the drive is set up OK. The problem turned
out to be that it would read pressed discs fine, but it failed on all my
burnt ones (bar one exception). Would trying to clean the innards help? I
have yet to try burning a disc on it.
