[Suns-at-Home] sparc powerlite - display problem

I'm having trouble with a Sparc Powerlite laptop.

This works perfectly in standalone mode, but when I
plug in an external monitor - the image breaks up
whenever
there is disk activity. Its pretty severe - too bad to
actually tolerate in normal use.

The internal disk is the IBM 1.2G scsi drive (2.5")
and
seems to be OK.

The model is the 'Turbo sparc model' with 64M ram.

When nothing is connected to the monitor socket, the
LCD
display is fine.

I'm not sure if this might be PSU related?

Any ideas?
