there are different connectors, 9-pin D or a special one somewhat reminding
of usb or firewire, but it's own different type.

but i think most equipment has a plug-in interface so you can just swap out
the copper interface for the optical interface (which seem to go for cheap
on ebay).   so you can keep with the connection scheme you've already started
for your network.
