well, it's working - mostly.  thanks to all who helped.

i still don't understand why
1. i can't set locale to anything but C.  haven't tried en_US yet
   though.  it -won't- take iso_8859_1, which is what i want.
2. finally sussed the screenblank under openwin - but why won't it
   kick in when i xlock the screen?
3. installed realplayer, but it refuses to play anything - says the
   audio device is already opened by another app.  clock?  i can still
   audioplay and cat > /dev/audio...
4. i've seen good performance on my serial port with zoom.se [up to
   4.3Kb/s on my v.34!], but frequently throughput gets trashed and i
   see lots of duplicate bytes -- -not- retransmissions.  a side
   effect of mistuned tcp/udp params?

anyone have any ideas?
