ta-daa!  up and functional now.

last thing bothering me is monitor powerdown.  in 2.5, i set it in
power.conf, and after 30 min. of inattention off it would go.  under
2.6 and openwin, this doesn't seem to happen.  reading the man page,
it appears that powerd only does it when no window manager is running;
when one is, the manager handles it...  but openwin doesn't; only cde.
and i'm off cde because it freezes unpredictably when i run perfmeter
or spider.  and i run them all the time.
